Brandon, most of what you wrote is correct. I wonder, would you mind sharing a link to the news clip you mentioned?

Though this was also before my time, I have read about it. They did give 10cc shots, mostly to kids, in mass clinics. The disease was more prevalent in young people, so that's who received most of the injections. In some cases they gave them to people in a city or town up to age 20, and the older kids/young adults received larger doses. If adults were considered to be at risk, Clinics were often set up in makeshift locations like gymnasiums, town halls or school libraries. The patients usually had to be lying down for injections that large, and in addition to the doctor or nurse, another adult volunteer was present to help undress and position the patient and hold them there. There wasn't as much concern for privacy back then, and sometimes people would have their buttocks exposed for several minutes in full view of many people. Some even ended up being photographed while getting injected, and a few such pictures wound up on front pages of local newspapers.

The shots were considered to be quite painful, perhaps even moreso for the older kids and young adults, who had much larger doses, but definitely better than getting polio - so people lined up gladly to drop their pants. By the way, this treatment was shown to be helpful in reducing the spread and intensity of polio, so it wasn't for nothing, but the newer and much less painful vaccine that all of us have received was far more effective.

I feel badly for the people that had to endure those shots. I would have been mortified, even now as an adult.

These days, clinics are set up when a hepatitis outbreak is feared, and I know people have stories about them as well.
