In reply to: Phillip 's message, "Gamma globulin shot clinics" on Wednesday, July 06, 2011, 10:01: pm

I was not around ion the 1950,s but i read all about the gamma gobulin shots in the 1950,s, they were a experiment as a prevention for polio before the salk - sabin vaccine came out in the late 1950,s, they used the kids as guniu pigs for this with parent consent which many parents did as the fear of polio was a big thing back then, it was a 1 time shot & a big 1 too, a single 10cc injection in the rump which had to hurt big time cuz as we all know gg is very thick like 10w30 oil, i seen a old news clip that showed a dr back then giving a kid one of those, the kid was bent over a exam table and it showed his face which he was crying with another person a nurse holding him in place while the dr gave it and you can bet back then they used a large bore needle like a 18 or 16 ga to give those shots, must have hurt like hell, but the parents out of fear consented to having it done to thier kids, they had clinics set up all over the usa to give the kids those shots & i am sure some adults got them too, but for some reason back then it seemed that it was mostly kids who would catch polo, in that artical it said kids got poloi from swimming in creeks& rivers which tuned out to be all a bunch of BSA as they found out it was spread like a virus when a person whould hack & cough, ha ha so much for prentive medicne back then as they were all wrong until salk-sabin figured it out, you can google what i told you and you should see the articals i told you about, oh those poor lil kids had to be gunia pigs for some dr,s who did not know.

Brandon, most of what you wrote is correct. I wonder, would you mind sharing a link to the news clip you mentioned?

Though this was also before my time, I have read about it. They did give 10cc shots, mostly to kids, in mass clinics. The disease was more prevalent in young people, so that's who received most of the injections. In some cases they gave them to people in a city or town up to age 20, and the older kids/young adults received larger doses. If adults were considered to be at risk, Clinics were often set up in makeshift locations like gymnasiums, town halls or school libraries. The patients usually had to be lying down for injections that large, and in addition to the doctor or nurse, another adult volunteer was present to help undress and position the patient and hold them there. There wasn't as much concern for privacy back then, and sometimes people would have their buttocks exposed for several minutes in full view of many people. Some even ended up being photographed while getting injected, and a few such pictures wound up on front pages of local newspapers.

The shots were considered to be quite painful, perhaps even moreso for the older kids and young adults, who had much larger doses, but definitely better than getting polio - so people lined up gladly to drop their pants. By the way, this treatment was shown to be helpful in reducing the spread and intensity of polio, so it wasn't for nothing, but the newer and much less painful vaccine that all of us have received was far more effective.

I feel badly for the people that had to endure those shots. I would have been mortified, even now as an adult.

These days, clinics are set up when a hepatitis outbreak is feared, and I know people have stories about them as well.
