I recently got buttocks injections for a condition. I found some shots , though the same medication were different in their "hurting", and I believe it was because of how the person administering the shot performed the injection and the medications being injected. Short of medications that burned or were very painful, that on being injected the actual placing of the needle into the buttock is done well if done quickly and by someone familiar with the process.

Ok, here's the thing.

When I was in my first semester of grad school, I had pneumonia for about the fifth time in my life. I drove myself to the hospital the night before my first exam. They listened to my lungs and then told me they were going to give me a shot of Rocephin, hospital strength, and it would hurt. They laid me down on the table and put it in my left hip. It felt like the nurse had hit me with the claw end of a hammer as hard as she could. She told me that the shot made grown men cry, but I was too sick to care that much.

THEN she told me that we had to wait a half hour and put one in the other hip. Fun. So we did.

Next morning, I was well.

Since then, when I start dipping into that pattern again, I BEG the doctors for Rocephin shots. They tell me I'm the only one who EVER asks for a Rocephin shot. They hurt like hell, but at least they aren't hospital strength, which must be about ten times stronger. Within a week, I'm fine, while without them, I'm down a good three weeks minimum.

So yes, they hurt. Badly. And it's worth every last bit of the pain not to slip into pneumonia.
