Subject: How bad do antibiotic injections hurt?

i have been sick for a month now, with what i think is a sinus infection and bronchitis. saw doctor about 2 and a half weeks ago, and doctor said no infection but i am getting worse. my cough is real bad at times expecally when i lay down, and if i cough to bad or to much i become all hoarse and cough meds are not helping still coughing and i have some sinus pressure, yellow/bloody snot and hoarseness. since i had this **** for a month now and i seem to be getting worse, i was going to just tell the doctor when i see one that i would rather take a shot of antibiotics instead of oral meds since i have been sick so long and am getting worse. well first off let me say this i am scared of needles and hate getting shots. i do know that antibiotic shots go in your butt, which i never had a butt infection which makes me even more scared to get one. i guess that i could either ask the doctor to give me the injection in my hip instead of my butt, or i can ask them to numb the area first so i do not feel it as much. like i said i hate getting shots so getting on in my butt will make me more tense and nervous. plus i heard that antibiotic injections hurt like hell times 2.

so my questions are:
1. do antibiotic injections hurt as bad people say they do?
2. if i ask for one can i get it in my hip instead of my butt, and if so would it not hurt as much?
3. if i do opt for the shot what can i do to relax and not be so scared, nervous and tense
4. since i had this for a month and am worse how many injections would i need? 1 or 2
5. how do u usually lay for the shot? on stomach, on side, or over the lap of someone? if i do opt for the shot i guess since i am so nervous and scared that i can alway lay across the doctors lap so that way i might feel more at ease and not so nervous and scared.
6. when u get a butt infection do they make u take ur pants and panties all the way off or just low enough to give u the injection?

sorry i have so many questions i am jsut nervous and want to know if a antibiotic injection is worth my time.

hi Mnadi, sorry you r that ill. here is some answers to your questions. Antibiotics hurt but not that bad, it hurts for about 10-30 minutes after the shot depending on the type and whether it is mixed with anesthetic or not.

lay on you stomach, clinch your hands really strong, cough during the needle entry, roll your toes inwards.
As for how many, I think 1 or 2 a day for 3 days will be fine. I hope it goes well for you, dont forget to write your experience

thanks for the answer laila, i thought that i would get one shot and be done with it, i did not realize that i would need 1 shot a day for so many days. i wanted to lay over the doctor's lap because like i said i hate needles, and would be nervous and plus i have a habbit of squarming at times and feel that it is better that i lay over the doctor's lap so that they can hold me down so that i do not squarm as much, and if that is not possible then maybe i can lay on my mom's lap and have her hold me down so that i can get the shot. plus i heard that antibiotic shots sting adn burn a whole lot is that true? i am real nervous about this adn do not know if i want a shot, just thought it would work faster.

2 shots to stop Asthma would not be antibiotics right? So the medicine wouldn't hurt as much as Penicillin right?

Hi Mandi,
I would not downplay the pain of an antibiotic shot. Nor would I believe you should get 3 days worth. Being that you don't have Strep or some other deadly illness, 1 would be plenty. Antibiotic shots have very thick serium which requires a large needle. They are injected into the muscle for slow release once inside you. So 1 would surfice. I would also think that unless you are super tiny, you won't be over anyones lap. They also hurt for much longer then an hour. Expect to be limping when you walk out and expect it to hurt for at least a day, if not a few days. You have to decide whether that is worth it. If the shot is Bicillin, that will hurt even more - much more. Even if they add anesthetic, it takes time for the anesthetic to work. The medicine will certainly hurt first. I have gotten many antibiotic shots throughout life and trust me, you may regret the decision. Also, if all you have is a virus, it will have little affect. So I would let the doctor give you his opinion even if you do suggest it. The needle is large so it will hurt when it goes in and the medicine burns and will burn for quite awhile. You can keep your toes inward, bury your head, sing Kumbaya or think of sheep, but when that medicine goes in, you will find out what pain is - trust me...

May I ask how old you are and what State you're in?

This is just my experience and I wouldn't listen to anyone who says it won't hurt much or for long. It does..A LOT!

Tim

well tim as for the tiny comment i am only 107lbs. i am 23 and live in PA. and u scared me a little bit with ur comment, it sounds like antibiotic injections really really really hurt. so based upon ur answer i might not get an injection now, i might stick with oral meds. i am a person who does not handle pain well and if i got an antibiotic injection then i would be screaming and crying for them to take it out and give me oral meds. so idk if an injection would be my best option. i just thought about an injection because i have been sick for a month now and seem to be gettign worse. at this point i def know i have a sinus infection, and most likely a bad case of bronchitis to. so i like i said i was thinking about an injection because i heard that it works faster then oral meds and i want to get better, but since u said the injection hurts like hell times 10 then i think i will stick with oral meds.

Mandi,
Take some Azithromycin and you'll start feeling better in 3-4 days. If you find it upsets your stomach, eat before you take it. On the first dose you take 2, then 1 a day thereafter. Unless someone is seriously ill, there is no reason for a shot. At least in New York we think this way...I haven't seen a doctor give a Penicillin shot in a longgggg time. I know my doctor avoids them...Other States may have a different attitude...Take the pills and you should start feeling better fast....Tim

Yes, Im the same Tim. Theres over 5 different antibiotic pills to choose from. Try Cipro or Keflex. Let your doctor decide. There's no guarantee that even a shot will work. If what you have is viral, antibiotics won't cure it...But I have had a Staff infection in my blood and all of my vains turned red, and pills took care of it in 2-3 days.....Tim

If you change your mind next time I prefer shots and I use to be very uncomfortable with needles. It feels like a sting similar to an aunt bite and the medicine will feel like pressure and a bit of a dull pain but nothing unbearable. I get a shot and I'm done with it.

Your comment reminds me of a beautiful young hotel housekeeper who told me that she preferred treatment by injection because of its efficiency even though she sometimes couldn't sit comfortably afterwards. Whenever she was off-duty owing to illness, I enjoyed visualising her getting a shot in her shapely bare bottom.

Smart move. With the shot, the best you could hope for is a bad pain when you walk or sit for a few days.....who wants that?

I had to get an emergency steroid shot for severe step in my hip and two antibiotic shots in my thighs and am 12o ibs. I'm usually amazing with pain and I was sobbing the whole time wanting them to stop. Doc didn't warn me and stabbed the first one I to my hip and I flinched and tensed. Worst pain from a doctor I've had, have to go in for two more today. Absolutely dreading it. Avoid it if you can my legs still kill from yesterday and the skinnier you are the worse it hurts. My strep is no where near the pain of these, after this I will refuse them.

They do hurt. But it's not so bad. Of you get someone who knows what they are doing. If the oral is t working ask for a diffrent antibiotic. You have a rest a resistance strand to what ever antibiotic you are takeing

Need Helpful Advice,
I had a combo Antibiotic/Cortisone shot in my left hip for a nasty sinus infection Thursday. The site is increasingly growing to a large red area that feels warm to the touch. Its very painful to walk, sit or lay down.
Anyone's own thoughts or personal experience on this?

hi Mandi,
I think you should discuss your treatment options with your doctor and follow his advice whether it is shots or oral meds. I think you shoul not wait long to see your doctor as chronic problems are usually harder to treat so avoid turning yours to a chronic condition

It all depends on what type of antibotic you get, I have had ampcillin, not bad at all, had pen-v-k ie bicillin, that one hurt, 4 cc of a white thick substance is what it is& a 18 needle is used for that shot, ,the worst part in my opinion is not the shot, Its the antibotic pills they put you after the shot cuz you have to take them for about 2 weeks, they make you shit yer braines out, i must have ran to the bathroom 6 times a day while taking those pills, i felt better and all but could not even go to work for 2 weeks when taking those things as you never knew when they would kick in i don,t think a diaper wold have even helped, if i had my choice i would have taken a shot in the butt every day for those 2 weeks cuz the shots don,t upset yer intestines, the ampcillin pills are the worst of all, i lost 8 lbs in 2 weeks taking those things, they SUCK.

Today I received a steroid shot and an antibiotic shot, one on the back of each hip. They killed! The steroid shot was not as painful going in as the antibiotic BIG needle. It's been 8 hours since I got them. The knots have gone away. But both area's still ache.....ALOT!

i had a thick antibiotic shot and a co-steroid shot within an inch of each other in the same hip, hurt is an understatement. the co-steroid needle is nothing, but the medicine burns after. the antibiotic needle was an 18gauge needle, as in the same size as the gauge of my speaker wire to my stereo. the needle hurt and the medicine hurt for over 6 hours. i sickness seemed to disappear overnight, only to return the next day....even worse. 2 weeks later, i still have knots in my hip that make popping noises (3) when i left my knee and put it down. the popping is on the way down.
i would not recommend the shot unless you have no choice.

A young resident nurse gave me a shot in the butt when I had walking pneumonia back in my late 20s. I believe it was erythamycin or something, I may be wrong. She told me it was going to be a little uncomfortable, that was an understatement. I dropped my drawers half way and knelt forward a little against the exam table. First came the coolness of the alcohol when she cleaned a spot on my left cheek. I didn't feel her stick me, but when she started pumping the antibiotic in it set my ass on fire. And there was so much of it, or maybe it was thick and took her longer to press it in, but it really hurt alot. She almost brought tears to my big proud ass and I'm not ashamed to admit it. I had a slight limp coming out into the waiting room and my girlfriend was like "what's wrong with you?". The whole way home, my left buttcheek felt like somebody had just touched it with red hot branding iron. My girlfriend laughed when I told her what happened. I was still pretty sore the next morning, but whatever was in that shot beat the hell out of my sickness. We went over to my parent's house the next day, and my girlfriend was fucking with me by smacking me on the the seat of my pants to see if I would jump. She knew I was too embarrassed to admit getting a shot in the butt.

Ha! I just got one today, and when I got back from it I decided to see if anyone else had had as awful an experience as me and came across this one. The nurse was very nice but definitely a liar. I'm terrified of needles and was already crying, so she told me it wouldn't hurt any more after one minute. Not even close! Like you, I barely felt the needle going in - enough to know it was but not real pain. But I sure as hell knew the moment the medicine started entering. Knocked the wind out of me. I limped out and am still limping around, and this was about five hours ago. Seriously hoping that it kicks the ear piercing infection I have by tomorrow morning or they'll want me to take it out.

And in response to anyone who comes across this and wonders how bad it really hurts - it hurts bad. I got it in the butt, and man, it burns. But it's not like a sharp sting (although there is that, too) - for me it felt like awful pressure, too. You can literally feel the medicine start to spread at first, very slowly and burning as it goes, and perhaps because it's so thick, it just feels like a horrible aching pressure for a good ten minutes after that. Mine was mixed with lidocaine and I can't even imagine what it would've felt like if it wasn't. So yes, prepare yourself, it's gonna kill and the nurse will probably lie about it. But if it clears you up as fast as I'm hoping it clears me up, it's very much worth it. (Not that I'll ever let them give me another one. Ever.)

I had one today for a cellulitis infection. I'm a 34yr old man and somewhat pride myself on my badassity. Holy shiite! After 6 hours of whining and 600 mg of ibuprofen, I think I'm going to live. I can't believe that shit is legal. It was like the nurse shoved a gas pump into my asscheek and pumped it full of death and lemon juice. I will have to be in pretty bad shape to endure that again. Definitely on my list of things that suck too bad to do twice.

Agreed. Pain from shots going in and medicine then the cramps and sore in your legs and hips definitely five times worse than my strep. I think my throat looks worse than it feels because she stabbed six injections when it only hurts to swallow. Now im pumped up on painful antibiotics and going in for more today. Other rooms probably thought I was dying I was like crying is this necessary haha. Avoid if possible. If I cry frlm needles it means it's not a normal shot.

It hurt like hell, but still not as much as the little bitty kidney stone I passed. I wish I had asked which antibiotic she injected. That was easily the most painful injection I've ever gotten. The type of antibiotic definitely matters as far as pain goes.

It seems to depend on which antibiotic is used. The Rocephin shot I got last week was extremely easy, very brief, and more in my hip than my behind. It was over so quickly I was surprised; I saw how much liquid was in the syringe, and couldn't believe the nurse had injected all of it with so little sensation and so quickly. It is not, however, a "long-acting" injection; it has to be repeated 2-3 times per day for several days if it is the only antibiotic used. In my case, I was already on two oral antibiotics, and the doc wanted to give me the Rocephin to "kick start" them, because I wasn't getting any better. I had a very small bruise at the injection site, which was not tender, and no residual pain after leaving the doctor's office. The Rocephin shot is a very different species of antibiotic injection than penicillin, which everyone seems to agree is horrendous (I've never had it, so I can't say.) It would be inconvenient to use the Rocephin as the primary antibiotic, though, unless you live next door to your doctor's office.

If it's caused by a bacteria and not a virus, yes. You could get a penicillin shot. However, contrary to many posts made by people claiming to get them, I have found that very few doctors actually stock it. I live in a fairly large city and checked around not long ago at most pharmacies and none of them had it available if I were to get a prescription from the doctor. They would have to order it. The only place I found I could get it right away was one of the hospital pharmacies would sell it through the in-patient pharmacy. Then I would have to go back to the doctor's office to have the shot given to me.

I just received a steroid injection for inflammation and swelling an antibiotic shot at the ER last night because i was on six days worth of oral antibiotics of Amox Clav 875 mg which werent helpig my symptoms and I only got worse. I have reccuring annoying strep every month since november and i cant wait to get those suckers removed!

But to answer your question, Antibiotics shot hurt yes but the pain isnt excruciating. Dont worry. For me the worst part was when she inserted the needle and began to push out the liquid four times until it was all injected thoroughly . It makes your muscle sore and its a much thicker needle but it honestly only lasts like 2 minutes ! I received my shot in my thigh which I much prefer over my butt or hip. But Im also stuying premed so i like looking at needles I find it fascinating!! Anyway the pain is more than what youre probably used to from regular shots but its managable and the way you feel after the shot is well worth 2 mins of muscle soreness/pain! It is morning now and I feel great i can finally swallow water and speak without a weird muffled voice! Its amazing! Good luck to you and dont be afraid!! Oh and i also just sat upright in the hospital bed when I received it. Try to talk to the nurse about anything really it makes you feel more comfortable than sitting quietly!

After two rounds of oral antibiotics for a sinus infection, I got an antibiotic injection yesterday. Lordy! I am thin and it burned like a dickens. It was giving with a topical pain killer so I really didn't feel it until I got to the CVS to pick up other meds. With a small store, it took me five minutes to walk out. Each step my hip muscle locked up like a cramp and I had to take a break every step. But, it seemed ridiculous and and couldn't stop laughing the whole long voyage out of the CVS. Barley sore at all today.

Sad thing is I always wondered about the injection because pill are rough on my guts. But, the injection is also processed through the intestines so I have the same issues without the option of stopping the meds.

I just had a Rocephin injection yesterday, it hurt like hell & it's STILL hurting. I have antibiotic resistant E. coli & have been on NUMEROUS different antibiotics. Even though they put lidocaine in it, it really didn't work. This was the second time I got that injection in as many months, I have to go back if I don't feel better so they can test me again. I'm sorry it's not better news.

I got an antibiotic in my butt this morning and tonight it still hurts like hell. I got a cat scratch on my arm that got infected and the doctor told me I needed an injection of rocephin. Thye nurse came in carrying this large syringe filled with a yellow medication. I recognized him from Gold's gym. He said this is your unlucky day amd my lucky day. How is it my unlucky day I asked? I have to give this in your lovely butt and to be honest it does not feel good. He said in fact since I know you you should actually let me this to you in two different sites. You hips are small. If it is going to hurt less than give me one in each side. I'm all about less pain. I unzipped my jeans and pushed them down to my thigh and laid face down on the gurney. he came over and said damn girl you do have one fine looking butt as he pulled down my panties. He playfully spanked my cheeks. I felt him swat me on my butt and then the cool alcohol followed by a sharp sting as he buried the needle in my left hip. Holy shit I said as he stared injecting and then I felt he massaging my hip. You sure were not kidding about it hurting. He rubbed my hip a few more minutes and said one more. He slapped my right cheek and once again I felt the needle go into my butt and then the burn. Afterward he massaged both of my buns and then placed bandiads on the two sites. This is your chance to play with my bare butt if you dont mind rubbing it some more.

I got 2 penicillin injections in my butt this morning and it hurt like hell. I was on spring break and had a three night stand my first. I am 18 and was embarrased to go to the doctor. he called me and told me I needed to get checked which I did. The nurse handed me two very large syringes that were cold. He said you need to hold these and warm them up. He said you are getting one in each butt cheek. I was shaking looking at the size of the needle. he came back in 15 minutes and said lets get this over. I loosened mt jeans and he said you need to remove your jeans and lie flat. He pulled down my panties and said big stick and I felt the first needle go into my butt and then intense apin as he filled my hip with the cold liquid. I was crying when he finished the first shot. He slapped my bare right cheek three times and then stabbed me. This time the needle stick was not as bad and he injected once again making me grab the sides of the table. Afterwards I looked at two blood trails going down my white cheeks. He put bandaids on the site and pulled up my panties. I gut up rubbing both of my butt cheeks for a few minutes before I even tried to wiggle into my jeans. Go for a long walk today to work that into your butt muscles. It had been 7 hours and it still aches.

It sounds to me like you got the standards treatment for an STD. The pain you felt was the medication going into the muscle. Again how fast the nurse pushes the plunger on the syringe also has something to do with how bad it hurts. Bicillin is a thick medication and if injected slower doesn't hurt as much but there will still be pain. Most of the time they have you get both at the same time. 2 nurses and they give you one in each hip at the same time because many patients say they hurt so much they don't want the second one. Some prevention the next time you want to have a 3 day fling might be better than getting 2 shots again.

I had to get one for strep on Friday and it is still tender today. It burned like fire when it went in and it seemed to take forever till she was done. I was told by the nurse that it would go in my "hip" butt this was right in the side off my butt cheek.

I hadn't had one since I was 15 and I remembered being pissed about it for quite some time. I had faked being sick with a headache to get out school. My mom made me go to our pediatrician to see what was wrong. He was out that day so I had to see another doctor in the same office. I actually had a fever and tested positive for strep even though I had no symtoms. I though owe well more of the pink medicine.

The doctor flipped through the chart and saw that I had been treated for strep earlier that year so she came to the conclusion that we should treat it agressively. She spoke with my mom and the two of them pretended to convince me of the shot as if I had any choice. While we waited I ask my mom, "it is in the arm, right?" She said, "I think so."

When the nurse entered she smiled and said, "ok, let's get those pant-sies down," as if she was going to have fun with this. My jaw dropped and I looked at my mom and she said, "oh no, it's one of those." Then the nurse laughed and said, "yep, one of those." My mom started to leave the room and the nurse said that she wanted her to stay and keep my legs still. I had no say in the matter.

I carefully unbuttoned my jeans and slid them down slightly along with my underwear trying to maintain as much dignity and privacy as I could before rolling over. After I rolled over the nurse pulled my jeans down low down by my ankles. Then she pulled my undewear down to my thighs exposing what little privacy I still had left. I heard her instructing my mom to use my jeans to hold my ankles and feet together.

It seemed like I layed there forever, exposed, and thinking about the predicament I had put myself in while they got set to
old my legs and give the shot. Then I felt the cold swab of alcohol. Moments later there was the needle stick and I thought "not bad." Then there was that same burn of fire that I felt the other day that seemed to last forever. At one point I flinched and moaned. Also embarrassing. The nurse put a cotton ball on the site and then taped it in place. Then she said , "all done. See, it wasn't that bad."

I struggled to pulled my underwear up without rolling over or lifting off the table but found this to be near impossible. I had to lift up and roll slightly off my front to pull them up and the nurse had pulled my underwear down below my front private area. Needless to say I know had nothing left unexpossed from this ordeal and the nurse and my mom got one last chuckle at my expense.

For the longest time I thought that the doctor and nurse may have known that I was not sick, and that they wanted to teach me a lesson. I don't think that anymore, but I never played sick again. I was also reminded the other day that butt shots do hurt and they are embarrassing. It is one thing to be an adult and to be part of the decision that you actually need it. It is another to be a child or adolescent and go through the process. I feel that if there is any alternative to putting a child or adolescent through this ordeal it should be carefully considered as my experience felt more like punishment than medical treatment.

I had an antibiotic injection today post op in Korea, seoul.... If I could've spoken Korean and realised what was coming I probably would've ran out of the clinic (30yr man) they injected in my arm..apart from the needle hurting like no injection ever had... It caused searing burning pains down my arm and literally raised me up off the bed... It felt like someone was burning my flesh.. I have never experience pain like it.... It was so painful it reduced me to tears (and I never cry) it was by far the worst 10mins of my life.... Felt like 10hrs.
then my arm felt numb and painful and some mild swelling in my hand... It's been 6hrs and my arm still hurts.. Just awful :(

I was diagnosed with bronchitis. So the doctor says I have prescribed an antibiotic and hydrocodone syrup. Then she drops the bomb you will get two shots. I received a shot in each butt cheek. I had an antibiotic and steroid shot. There was some blood on the band aid from the injections, but nothing serious. I limped out the office and drove in pain to fill my prescriptions. I have not been able to sit for extended periods of time. I am in pain, but prayerful it won't last for much longer.

Hi,
I'm in NY. I know they give shots in hospitals. But I have never even seen my doctor give a shot. As sick as I might be he always gives me a Z-Pack or another antibiotic. I had blood poisoning once and my veins turned bright red and he still sent me away with pills. Perhaps it's different in each State? Most people I know would refuse a shot anyway and ask for pills. It might take longer but it's far less painful.....Tim

Tim,
Your comment about shots in hospitals took me back to Christmas Eve about 12 years ago after my cat bit my hand on a Sunday morning. By that evening, my arm was a brilliant red from my fingers up to halfway up my upper arm. The next day Monday, was Christmas Eve and we were in the doctor's office. His initial decision was to send me to the hospital to be admitted so they could give me an IV drip to administer the antibiotic treatment. I was a newlywed (5 weeks) & I insisted that the doctor offer a treatment alternative that did not include hospitalization. He finally did, telling him to "drop your drawers and get a good grip on that (exam) table." My wife, a nurse, saw the injection syringe carried in by the clinic nurse. My wife's 'Oh No' told me all I needed to know. The soreness and discomfort of my backside lasted about five days, accompanied by the discomfort of the antibiotic-induced diarrhea. In hindsight, I would make the same request again. A 'sore ass' is preferable to being alone on Christmas Day. During military service, I spent enough Christmas Days alone (six of them overseas) to know.

All I have to say is "Holy Mother!" I had to get a steroid shot in my left hip, and antibiotic in the right one for bronchitis... I asked the nurse if they hurt, and she said "No. At least I don't think so." She was a petite little lady, probably 5'5, and like 120lbs. So here I am thinking, ok cool, I got this. Left one goes in, I don't even feel it. I chuckle to myself about how my butts so big I don't even feel them. Right one goes in and it stings a little but nothing major. Pull my pants up and I'm all excited to hopefully feel better................ and then the burning kicks in.............. Ok seriously lady?! So I start rubbing them (like she said would help.) And yup, just as I thought, IT'S GETTING WORSE. I got them at 12 this afternoon. It's now 9:22pm and was just bent over counter because I felt like I was having contractions. (And yes after 3 kids, and definitely not prego now, I know what contractions feel like!) I feel like if someone asks if it's going to hurt, at least tell them. "Ya, it's going to burn a bit, and you're going to be sore. But it doesn't last forever, and you'll be all better when they're done!" At least then I could have prepared myself... Well played nurse... well played!!

They hurt like hell. I am 23 and weigh 110 pounds. I work in a ICU and I have been taking care of several NIN1. I had a patient that passed away from this and we were all suggested to get a shot of rocephin to cover us incase. I have given this to a lot of patients and they all said it burns. Not wanting to be a big baby in front of my co-workers I decided to have my fiance who is also a nurse give me the injection. I went to his unit and told him what they had suggested and he said he would give me the shots after we got off. In the morning he came over to my apartment. I had coffee as I watched him mix up the rocephin and drew it up in two small syringes 1.5 cc in each. Are you ready he asked. Hell no. Knowing that you are about to make my ass really sore I told him. I went into my bedroom and took off my scrub pants. I had on a tiny pair of blue silk panties. He pulled those down exposing my tan bottom. This was his first look at my bare butt. You have one cute little rear as he spanked my left butt 3 times before plunging the needle in my butt. I screamed out as he started injecting. It burns really bad. He rubbed my hip for the last next five minutes and then again smacked me hard on the right cheek three times and plunged the other needle in my butt. I was crying this time when he finished. he spent a better part of the morning putting ice packs on my sore butt and massaging it.
It has been 2 days and my butt is still very tender. I am here to tell you they hurt and if they tell you they don't they are full of s***

It depends on what type of shot it was. Bicillin and rocephin can hurt for several days. Depends on your weight. Thin people has less muscle mass so that also makes it hurt more. More muscle mass it is absorbed over a larger area. it also depends if you walk it off or just sit. Hope this helps

Hi,
I may be wrong but, when they give large shots, I think it tears the muscle first, then slowly absorbs. I dont think its injected and absorbs instantly. Therefore, the continued pain would be from the injury of the torn muscle.

Was told by getting the injection vs oral that i would feel better since I was already in the hospital so I agreed. Was lifting my sleeve and an older nurse came in told me to lay on my stomach because the shot was on the bum. Omg when I got injected the needle wasnt bad but the pain was so bad and burned from from the antibiotic I almost passed out and even when it was over the pain throbbed so bad. Going oral for now on

Peter, I would think that they wont release you until youre safe to go home so oral antibiotics would be enough?

I had 5 spine surgeries and between all 5, only got 1 small shot in my butt. Other then that, everything was intravenous. I only let them give me the shot because I figured it would be a small one. It was to dry me up she said. It still hurt afterwards so that was bad.

Its my understanding, the only reason to give a shot of Penicillin etc, is because it works instantly. What you would need wouldnt need to work that instant....

In any case, let us know.

PS. I had 5 spine surgeries because of 1 herniated disc and I kept having them redo it till they got it right. Im fine now....

I had IV lines removed for oral medications pain killers and such but still got blood thinning agents injected twice a day after the blood transfusion. Also got some other medications injected. for last couple of days I was in hospital and I wasn't only one. There was a lady in next bed who had Hysterectomy and I heard nurse telling her to turn over as injection had to go in her bottom and she still had IV connected.

Yes if they remove your IV line and you need some medication that cannot be given by mouth then you will get a shot as long as it can be given IM. Sometimes patients lose their IV access for various reasons anyway and they have to be given IM meds anyway.

Years ago I had to have a procedure done in day surgery and anesthesia was not needed. It was still surgery but on my arm and he used lidocaine and I never felt a thing. I had to have two shots of antibiotic though and they had to be given IM since I did not have a IV.

Having just read your post, Mandi, it is a bit late for advice but the following might help for future reference:

1. They certainly hurt but probably not as much as some people claim.
2. As the biggest muscle in the body, the buttock is by far the least painful place to get any injections.
3. You could take something to read while awaiting and getting the shots to take your mind off them. In my youth I was told to take a deep breath, close my eyes and pinch my nose as a diversion when I felt the alcohol swab. Most important is to assume the required position before the injection is prepared so you can't see it because antibiotic injections are frighteningly large and look worse than they feel.
4. You might need one injection per day for a few days.
5. I usually bend over for injections but I have had them lying prone. Lying prone makes it easier to relax the muscle but also to tense-up, whereas bending over makes it difficult to tense so, if you can't relax, it is better to bend over. During my youth and adolescence I was afraid of buttock injections and had to bend over the receptionist's lap for them. I feared the embarrassment of her watching me get them in the bare bottom more than the pain but that was actually constructive because the embarrassment took my mind off the shots themselves.
6. Your panties should be pulled all the way down to expose your entire bottom but you shouldn't have to remove them entirely.

Struggling with a UTI the past 4 days and finally went to a doc in the box to get confirmation. They offered an antibiotic shot and, since I usually do well with shots, I said why not. Leaving for a 4 day vacay tomorrow and thought this should speed the healing up. Well, I think the UTI is cured because my mind is now on the residuals of the freaking shot and how much my hip hurts. This sucker hurt. The nurse was honest. She said I am going to feel like someone kicked me in the butt. Spot on. I am not sure I would choose to do so again, or I will certainly go in next time with the knowledge of the different kinds of medicines in shots that are available. I will be in the car over 7 hours tomorrow. I probably won't be peeing a lot, but I sure as heck hope I can walk.

Having grown up in the era of penicillin shots, visits to the doctor throughout my youth and adolescence normally involved pulling everything down to my ankles and bending over the receptionist's lap to get one. I was so overwhelmed with embarrassment at the girl watching me get an injection in the bare bottom that I don't recall the shot being particularly painful at the time but I often couldn't sit down later.

The shot alone truly doesnt hurt as bad as many make it out to seem but honestly the soreness is what gets ya in my opinion ..i got two shots of antibiotics one on each butt cheeck lol .. but ya basically the shot didnt hurt after words wen the meds begin to circulate thats when i exprienced the most pain..i culdnt sit down for about 3 minutes after getting them shots lol ..besides that the injections are known to help faster so i wuld say take the pain in order to get better much faster .... ✌

I recently got buttocks injections for a condition. I found some shots , though the same medication were different in their "hurting", and I believe it was because of how the person administering the shot performed the injection and the medications being injected. Short of medications that burned or were very painful, that on being injected the actual placing of the needle into the buttock is done well if done quickly and by someone familiar with the process.

Ok, here's the thing.

When I was in my first semester of grad school, I had pneumonia for about the fifth time in my life. I drove myself to the hospital the night before my first exam. They listened to my lungs and then told me they were going to give me a shot of Rocephin, hospital strength, and it would hurt. They laid me down on the table and put it in my left hip. It felt like the nurse had hit me with the claw end of a hammer as hard as she could. She told me that the shot made grown men cry, but I was too sick to care that much.

THEN she told me that we had to wait a half hour and put one in the other hip. Fun. So we did.

Next morning, I was well.

Since then, when I start dipping into that pattern again, I BEG the doctors for Rocephin shots. They tell me I'm the only one who EVER asks for a Rocephin shot. They hurt like hell, but at least they aren't hospital strength, which must be about ten times stronger. Within a week, I'm fine, while without them, I'm down a good three weeks minimum.

So yes, they hurt. Badly. And it's worth every last bit of the pain not to slip into pneumonia.

The slower serum is injected the less is is supposed to hurt but it can seem to take forever at the time. Worst for me was gamma globulin. I once timed it at three minutes from the time I felt the needle go into my buttock until it came out.

They hurt a lot when the needle goes and and even ten times more when the medicine is injected. It also has to be done slowly so it takes time and burns the entire time....I got many as a kid and to this day, never have forgotten it....Tim

I got a shot in the butt today by a dr. I'm in Australia. I had to ask for it as I am doing contract work and anymore days off work means I'm not paid. I have bacterial tonsillitis and the pain has been terrible, like swallowing razor blades every time. I had the needle once before when I was about 20 and remember the infection clearing up super quickly. Well, the needle did hurt, but it was over quite quickly - maybe a minute of pain. My butt and hips are still sore, but I'm really hoping I feel heaps better tomorrow morning because I have to go to work. No sign of improvement yet. Still alternating painkillers - panadol and ibuprofen. I can deal with the butt and hip pain if the throat pain goes away. Dr prescribed antibiotics twice a day for next 10 days, not ideal but better than trying to fight the infection without them.

Like you, Caroline, my first symptom of illness was always a sore throat and I regarded the treatment as exchanging a sore throat for a sore bottom. In my youth I always feared the embarrassment of being injected in the bare bottom more than the pain, which probably helped me tolerate the shots themselves.

You are a brave girl to undergo two shots daily for ten days, which will probably render you unable to sit down but you are right that injections are more efficient than oral medication. Following the advice of a former girlfriend, I also now request treatment by injection.

Helen, Any shot in the butt will hurt. But Penicillin or antibiotics won't be the ones your getting; and they hurt the most. You may get Prednisone, a steroid, or something like that. I had Prednisone and didn't feel a thing. Now there may be drugs I am not aware of that hurt much more but you won't be getting the super painful ones.....Although all shots in the butt suck!!!!
