Who got a smallpox vaccination as a kid? Do you remember when you got it and do you still have the scar? Where is it - arm, leg or thigh? Did you get more than one? Would you get one again?

According to my baby book my family doctor gave me mine in 1952 when I was five years old. I stil have a dime sized indented scar over my upper left arm. In 1959 my family went on a cruise and we all got revaccinated so I have a smaller scar about an inch below the other one. I would get another one if the need arose.

When I had to go to the doctor for a smallpox vaccination during my early school years, I was afraid of where I would get it. When he vaccinated my arm, I felt very grown-up but then I had to pull everything down to my ankles and bend over his receptionist's lap for a booster shot.

I was 10 years old when I got mine. It is about the size of a nickel, on my left upper arm. I got some other shots at the same time, 3 as I remember. they hurt a lot more than the vaccination did. needles were not as sharp back then as they are now.
I don't understand why now they say the side effects are so bad. everyone got vaccinated then. Other than having a sore arm for a few weeks you did not hear of any bad effects.
I would get one again in a minute If I could.

I came across an interesting topic in a book titled "Practical Druggist and Pharmaceutical Review of Reviews" (written in 1908) in which they describe how to create an imitation smallpox vaccination scar by placing a drop of nitric acid on the arm where you want the scar to be. In a few weeks the spot where the nitric acid was placed will leave a granulated sore and when the sore heals, it will produce a scar so nearly resembling a real smallpox vaccinations scar that the average physician can't tell the difference. My scars are real however and were caused by the reaction to the Dryvax vaccine.

I have actualy got three smallpox vaccinations. The first one I don't remember at six years old. The next one I got when I and my family were going on vacation to Africa when I was sixteen. My lastest was after 911 as part of a study on the effectiveness of smallpox vaccine. I have three smalpox scars on my left arm that alot of people ask me about. I am 42 years old so many people my age didn't get vacinated.

I got one as a baby, according to my mother. It would have been 1951-52 & I don't recall the experience. The scar is on my upper left arm. The clinic at my base decided I needed to be re-vaccinated n 1994 as I was getting shots updated prior to being transferred to Okinawa for two years. That one didn't take & didn't leave a scar either.

I got my first as a baby in 1952. I got it on the thigh because my held me like the other women in line at the clinic. Their babies were girls so I got mine like a girl. I got one later when I started school and that was in the arm. I guess because we lived close to Mexico where the disease was still common, the public health nurses came to school and vaccinated everyone in first grade or transfers who weren't vaccinated. Boys pulled up their sleeve and got it on the arm, Girls pulled up their skirt and got it on the thigh. You would have to look close with a magnifying glass to find the scars now.
