It was unknown to me that I contacted poison ivy when I fell recently, landing in a wooded area. It took a few days of hydro cortisone to realize...this isn't doing any good.
Well it was a very short visit, but the doctor said she'd give me something for it. She stated two products. Both foreign to me.
Returning to the exam room, I was sure she'd be carrying a syringe or two. Didn't go down like that. MY meds came in pill/cream form.
but I was wondering if anyone here might have received injections either in the arm/buttocks to combat as she put it, a "classic" case of poison ivy, and even she winced, as I got a good rash in my groin area, and to say it looked ugly, is an understatement.
Thanks.

Certainly a long acting steroid like Depo Medrol can be used for poison ivy. It should be given by deep intramuscular injection on a larger gauge needle, 23 or less placed deep in the buttocks. As I recall, corticosteroid injections are quite painful for such small volume injections and often cause one to feel faint as the medication is pushed into the muscle. Creams are just a sloppy mess since most poison ivy is seen in the hot summer months. Oral steroids are an option but they need to be given daily for 10-14 days to be successful in resolving poison ivy for good.

rutabaga,
Thanks for your response. At the time, as my post may have indicated, I was given two items which seem to be lessening the effects of the poison Ivy, one a topical ointment, the other are pills which I will be taking for 10 days. I walked across the street and waited for about 10 minutes as my prescriptions were filled. I did think the Dr. might have given me an IM injection due to her reaction to seeing my condition. Anyway, thanks again for your response.

I was helping my mom weed her flower bed and I guess I got into some poison ivy. I had it on my arms and legs and some on my chest. I went to the ER because the itching was just too bad. I was taken to a room and the nurse came in and said I have several injections. I am sitting there on the exam table itching. he tells me to stand up and bend over the end of the table. He unties my gown and opens it up. I am standing there in my lavender panties which he pulls down. I am embarrased because he is this stranger looking at my bare butt. I feel him stick the needle inmy butt and then this horrible burn as he injects. He tells me it is the benadryl. I have tears in my eyes when he pulls out the needle. He rubs my butt which really hurt and then gradually felt better. He pats my other cheek and says one more and once again I feel the jab and this was worse than the other shot. I was crying when he finished. it was solumedrol. I am holding my butt in my hands walking around the room. My bottom ached for 2 days. The itching went away within an hour. I told my mom I was not going to help any more. Yes they will give you two big shots in your butt. Not much fun. I am 19 and I hope I never go through this again. I am told rocephin hurts worse.

I had a second episode with poison Ivy, but it was the steroid pills I got again, though they seemed to take a lot longer to work. I had thought about returning and requesting a shot or shots, but I considered the cost and what I was experiencing was just some itching and rash that needed time to clear up. I did some reading up on home remedies and after applying them, the condition has just about cleared up. But thanks for your story.
