Having grown up in the era of penicillin shots, every visit to the doctor ended with the dread instruction to pull everything down to my ankles and bend over the receptionist's lap. When very young I didn't know what was really happening because my shots were never prepared until I was in position (i.e. I never saw them) and I was encouraged to think what I felt was the receptionist pinching my bare bottom. The first time I recall knowing the truth was when I glimpsed a booster shot just before bending over the girl's lap. At first I was relieved that it didn't hurt as much as my usual penicillin shots but afterwards I couldn't sit down for several days.
From then on I feared injections back there more than ever - not so much for the pain as the humiliation of the receptionist holding me across her lap and (presumably) watching me get them back there while uttering such condescending remarks as, "Be brave, you know you have to get this; it will soon be over and then you can get dressed and go home". The scenario continued well into adolescence and the older I got, the greater my fear because hearing about others getting shots in the arm made me deem buttock injections childish. Worst of all was the time my doctor's beautiful teen-aged daughter (only slightly older than I) was acting receptionist during the school holidays. I desperately craved her respect and didn't want her even to know that I still got injections back there, much less undergo the supreme humiliation of going across her lap for her actually to see me get one in the bare bottom. When the doctor proposed in her presence my "usual shot in the bottom", I burst into tears, betraying for the first time my terror of the ordeal.
Prior to that I had often been praised for taking my shots well. The truth was that I was too frightened to do anything but comply promptly when told to pull down my pants and bend over, but it gave the impression that I was brave and that once worked to my distinct disadvantage. My slightly younger cousin always made a fuss about injections and, as she had a crush on me, it was suggested that she and I go together the next time. I looked forward to seeing her get a shot in the bottom, perhaps even holding her across my lap to get it. Once inside, however, I learnt that the shot was for me and the object of the exercise was to set an example by letting her see how well I took it. So far as I am aware, she looked away when I got it but, being in the room, she was certainly aware that I was bending across the receptionist's lap with my pants down to get it in my bottom.
House calls normally ended with rolling over in bed for a shot. Although there was no receptionist to witness my chagrin, we had an au pair girl who always seemed to be loitering outside the open bedroom door. Even if she didn't look in to see me get those shots, hearing me told to roll over for them made it clear to her where I was getting them and she sometimes condescendingly asked me afterwards if I could sit down.
The most embarrassing house call was when my adolescent girlfriend was visiting and she stayed in the room to watch while I rolled over to have my bottom bared and injected. Later, however, she told me about her own shots back there. We soon began playing doctor and every session ended with rolling over or bending over for a "shot" - often realistically simulated with sterile pins. Although we were both turned on by getting as well as giving those play shots, we remained afraid of real shots back there, deeming them childish and regarding getting injections in the arm as a rite of passage. When a problem with the oral vaccine meant we had to get polio shots, our mutual fear was where we would get them - exacerbated by a magazine picture of a girl not much younger getting hers the way I was particularly afraid of getting mine - in the bare bottom while held across a receptionist's lap. My girlfriend was a year older than I and got hers first - in the arm although the doctor had recommended it in the buttock. She then really scared me by saying that her cousin of exactly my age got his in the bottom. It made me afraid that the "rite of passage" age fell between hers and mine and that I would feel dreadfully childish by comparison if I had to get in the bottom a shot she had in her arm.
My only real adult embarrassment was in an hotel when the nurse came to my suite to give me an injection. Just as I bent over with pants down to get it, the maid came in!
