Throughout my youth and adolescence I was so frightened when told to pull down my pants and bend over the receptionist's lap for a shot that I wanted to cry, but I never did, nor did I scream because the receptionist often complimented me for taking it bravely.
The only time I did cry was for an injection I didn't get. I was about 14 and the doctor's beautiful teenaged daughter was acting receptionist during the school holidays. I really fancied her and craved her respect so I didn't want her even to know that I still got injections in the bottom (which I deemed childish), much less endure the almost inconceivable humiliation of bending across her lap for her to watch me get one back there. I was so pent-up with fearful emotion that, when the doctor asked me the dread rhetorical question, "How about a shot?", I burst into tears and he made it even worse by asking in her presence, "What's wrong? It's just the usual shot in your bottom". He eventually relented and prescribed pills but I realised that my tantrum must have made me appear even more childish to the girl than I would have bending bare-bottomed across her lap for the injection.

I had to get a penicillin shot in my butt when I 38, when I saw the needle I asked the nurse if it really had to be giving in my butt. She told me yes and to be a big boy. Will I did cry it really did hurt and even did sting. I think I felt it for the rest of the day also.

I certainly feel showing your true emotions when getting hurt by having a large sharp long needle and thick liquid being pressed by a plunger into your behind is certainly grounds for tears. My God, showing your emotions certainly isn't necessarily an unmanly thing to do. If you can't express your feelings by going through something as upsetting as getting a very pain full injection, then when are you supposed to cry? Are you only able to cry when someone close to you passes away? That type of thought pattern in childish. It’s OK to cry.

Well I am a retired nurse and will have to tell you more men cried when getting shots in their bottoms than kids and women. I can remember this one guy I would say mid 40's, big man and he had to get two shots in his bottom he was crying so hard by the time I was done.

Hi Peggy,

Being that you're a retired nurse, would you help us by filling out the questions directed to the heading QUESTIONS FOR NURSES or TO SHOT GIVERS?

Wouldn't it be common sense that giving shots is only one small procedure nurses do all day and that most of them have no preference or particular feelings about who they give a shot to? Do they even have the time to "enjoy" or not enjoy giving a shot with their busy schedules and multitude of patients they have each day????

Tim

Harry,

You're not alone. About 5 years ago, at age 34, I had to go to an ER after an unfortunate encounter with a cat that was found to have rabies. Pretty nerve-wracking situation, and when after finally being called into a semi-private exam area, I was weighed and then a doctor came in with five vials and a bunch of syringes. I had expected to get one shot, and it was partly the shock of seeing that may needles, and then the shock of being told to pull my pants down, and then the shock of how much the first one hurt. Each shot seemed to take minutes, and by the third one I was crying. The fourth was worst of all, and I remember being pretty embarrassed by the whole thing. Rabies would be worse I suppose, but not much.
