I had to be readmitted to hospital after an ovarian surgery due to a wound infection. I was getting regular IV antibiotics through the canula with pain medications at night and before the dressing. Blood samples were drawn daily for blood work. I was also getting heparin shots in my belly. Three days after admission the canula was blocked and after 5 attempts to insert a new one, the attending doctor told me that it would be easier to give me the antibiotics and pain medications by intramuscular injections in the butt. It was a painful experience to lean on the side in this observation room shared with 4 other patients with half opened curtin and get two shots on the same side twice a day. One of the antibiotics (Claforan) was really painful. Each time it was a new nurse with a different technique the only constant thing was the pain during and after the injection. The worse was a young trainee who would select a sore spot of a previous injection. After 5 days, I had a difficult time sitting in bed or lying on my sides because of the sore butts, could not lye on my stomach due to the wound and heparin and my arms were realy sore from the pockings. I was begging the doctor to put me on an oral stuff instead but he insited that I should go on the same regimen for a week before being discharged. It was a tuff experience, I hate needles.

I too had a near similar experience few months ago when I had an infected wound in the foot. After the failure of oral drugs, the whole limb was getting red and swollen . The doctor admitted me to the local hospital for IV antibiotics and pain medication. The pain injections were given in the butt once a day and antibiotics twice IV . On the third day they had difficulty finding veins for the cannula so the doctor suggested to give the shots in the butts. Boy they hurtled soo much that I was in tears begging the nurse to pull the big needle out. Both cheeks were swollen and very sore and one injection left me with a coin size bruise. I had to get more than 10 shots the worst was when the doctor told me that I better get a bicillin injection every month for three months to ensure that the cellulitis does not recur. This injection of thick white stuff with big deep needles is simply a hell! I am glad that I am over!

I was admitted to hospital for a complicated pneumonia after the failure of oral antibiotics. I am not tall and slightly underweight. The IV antibiotics were given for 2 days then, the blocked line!. The doctor suggested the intramuscular route. I had no idea how an intramuscular antibiotic can be so painful when given and sore after that. I am used to intramuscular injection as I have a B12 deficiency and I get a shot every month at my doctor's office, but this was different. With some nurses, it could tolerate the pain without crying with another old nurse, seeing her would bring the tears to my eyes. She would jab the needle firmly and push the antibiotics very quickly. My muscles would cramp and I would feel the intense pain reaching my thigh and even foot! The spot would remain tender for the following days. After 4 days I had sore, bruised spots all over my butt cheeks and I could feel the swallen injection sites. I was limping while walking from the aches. The last two injections were the worst, I suggested to the nurse to try the IV route first, so she diluted the stuff and when she failed, she asked me to lay on my side and changed the needle to a longer and thicker one. The burning was very intense and she insited to massage the site causing it to burn more. She left me with a big bruise. A week later when I was due to get my B12 the nurse at the office said OMG, who did this to you? I still remember the soreness and the pain and I hope I dont go through this again!

I had a near similar experience. I went through a gyn open surgery and following a 5 days in hospital on IV and IV antibiotics as well as twice daily heparin in the belly as I had a clot during my last pregancy. I had only one painful injection in my butt for pain. I was discharged with bruised belly and very sore arms from the IV and daily blood samples. Two days later the wound was oozing and I started to have fever. I was 150lbs then, I went to the emergency room and they told me that the wound was infected and gapping and that I will have to be readmitted for IV antibiotics and again, the heparin in the belly. I was also getting pain medications by the IV before the daily painful dressing and intravenous vitamin C.
Three days later, my IV went out and two nurses a blood sampling technician and an ICU Doc tried each twice or even more without success. The attending told me that they either would insert a line under x-ray or give me my medications by intramuscular injections. I told him that I had enough woulds and accepted the intramuscular injections.
On the same day I started the twice daily agony of injections, the nurse would knock on the door with a tray with two syringes, one in each cheek twice a day. On the following days I was chivering at the thought of the pain that I will be going through. One antibiotic (a cephalosporin) the nurse told me was causing a severe pain and burning that would lance through my whole limb and the second an antibiotic too, taken every morning needed a blood monitoring and kidney functions with blood sampling (many pokes to have a small sample!) every day.I would also get a pain medication and the worse was a the vitamin C. I begged the doctor to stop it as It was very painful especially that I could only lean on the sides to get the injection as my belly would would limit me from lying on my side on stomach. After few days I would start crying at the sight of the nurse entering the room with the syringe tray as I knew what was waiting for me!
A week later I was a moving sore bruise and was having difficulty sitting in bed! They had to restitch the wound and I had to continue on oral antibiotics for a week later. I have tears in my eyes when I remember this painful experience.
