Not actually refuse, but I did manage to avoid a shot once in adolescence when my doctor's beautiful teenaged daughter was acting receptionist during the school holidays. I normally had to pull everything down to my ankles and bend over the receptionist's lap for injections, which I dreaded because I thought getting shots back there childish, especially with a girl watching me get them in the bare bottom. I fancied this girl and desperately craved her respect so I didn't want her even to know that I got injections in the bottom, much less have her see me get one there. I was so frightened that I couldn't even admire her shapely legs without fearing having to view them from across her lap for a shot. By the time the doctor summoned me, I was so pent-up with fearful emotion that his mere mention of a shot made me burst into tears (doubtless making me appear even more childish to the girl than I would have seemed bare-bottomed across her lap). The doctor relented and prescribed pills but they made me sick, so I had to return for the injection anyway. When waiting with his daughter on the return visit, she condescendingly and unconvincingly uttered the sentiment, "I hope you don't need a shot today."
