IMPACT OF WEB 2.0
The new trends on the internet probably already affect you, without you realizing it. You are able to navigate easier and find matching results for your precision.
You may be using Web sites just as you use desktop applications: seamless navigation, without interruptions of your activity.
You may have customized your user interfaces on your favorite search engine according to your preferences and needs.
It is now easier to communicate with colleagues, professional organizations, friends and partners to share ideas, media and information.
You may be receiving instant news updates.
You may be also putting your knowledge to use, by co-authoring content on encyclopedia and wikis.
SPEED OF READING INCREASED
Another change that affects how a person users the internet is that the speed of reading in the digital age is changing.
Being able to surf countless web pages, scanning information, might be a good practice for cursory knowledge acquisition, but it does not lend itself to in depth reading.
It is important to learn to distinguish between skimming for information and in-depth reading. Reading on the internet requires both skills.
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) news feeds allows users to determine what is worth reading in depth and what is not. They provide a way to receive content in short summaries, easy to scan so the user can select what they want to read.
DEVELOP HIGHER ORDER THINKING SKILLS
Develop higher order thinking skills is not an easy task. Historically, educators have looked to Bloom’s taxonomy (1956) for assistance. Bloom’s model divided thinking skills into lower-order and higher-order knowledge. During the 1990’s a new group of cognitive psychologists, led by Lorin Anderson ( a former student of Bloom’s), updated the taxonomy reflecting relevance to 21st century work.
The use of Web 2.0 applications can be excellent instructional tools to assist learners in moving up the ladder toward higher-order thinking skills from remembering, to understanding, to applying, to analyzing, to evaluating, to finally creating, the ultimate strength and purpose of the newer applications.

INCREASED PARTICIPATION AND CREATIVITY
The new Web services permit users to increase their emphasis on participation and creativity and allow them to reach out to new audiences.
Interactivity is a chief feature of most new online tools while existing digital resources are presented more efficiently.

CURRENT RETRIEVAL UPDATED
One of the changes on the Web is that blogs, most social bookmarking tools, and other Web 2.0 services are organized in reverse chronological order.
Their very architecture orients them or at least their front pages, toward the present moment.
Users can search the blogosphere for political commentary, current cultural items, public developments in science, business news like never before. (Alexander 40)

KEEPING STUDENTS SAFE
The biggest concern of parents and schools today is keeping the students safe in a safe environment, both physically and digitally.
In the digital word, internet safety is more than not publishing children’s name on the internet or permitting students to access obscene content online. Safety is also responsabilitry, appropriatness, and commom sense, as well.
If we ask our students to publish as part of a class assignment, or if we know they are publishing outside of the classroom(which they are), it is our obligation to teach them what is acceptable and safe and what is not. ( Richardson)
Many schools filter Web 2.0 sites without understanding the value and potential of many of these sites for educational purposes. Schools will need to evaluate each site on case-by-case bases and individually unblock those sites that educators would be able to use to strengthen their particular curriculum area.
Those decisions are judment calls based on the maturity of the students and the value of the site.In making these difficult decisions we first need to decide who the audience is.
In nearly all Web 2.0 applications there are ways to set usage privileges of the intended audience. Care needs to be taken to set the correct parameters when an activity is first set up on the Web to avoid unexpected privacy issues.
Applying Web 2.0 resources improve user’s higher forder thinking skills. They improve user’s creativity and ability to collaborate with peers, which is essencial for the 21st century workforce.
If parentes, educators and the current workforce do not keep pace with technology that young people use on a daily basis, they risk becoming irrelevant and will have little or no impact on the future of society as a whole.
We need to educate our children and youth about privacy, trust, and the wolrd Wide Web.
