RH bill debates pushed to July

SENATE Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III on Tuesday said the Senate will not be able to debate the controversial reproductive health (RH) bill as it will be preoccupied with the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona and the Anti-Money Laundering Act when it resumes sessions on May 7.
“We will probably resume debates on the RH bill in July,” Sotto said in an interview.
Aside from the continuation of the impeachment trial, Sotto said Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile has directed him to schedule marathon sessions on the AMLA amendments to meet the May 2012 deadline set by the international financial watchdog Financial Action Task Force.
“And besides, there are many senators who wish to interpellate the sponsors of the RH bill. So I don’t see discussions on the bill resuming anytime soon,” Sotto said. The bill’s sponsors are Senators Pia Cayetano and Miriam Defensor-Santiago.
Sotto himself is opposing the measure, saying that most of its contents are presently being implemented by the Department of Health.
