Teenage pregnancy in PH tops numbers in Southeast Asia

THE Philippine Legislators Committee on Population and Development Foundation yesterday said lawmakers should take the reported increase in teenage pregnancies in the Philippines as a cue to finally pass the controversial reproductive health bill.
PLCPD executive director Ramon San Pascual said the problem can be promptly addressed if the RH bill is passed into law.
“Ignorance, poverty and fears are explosive mix of factors that would victimize our youth unless we help and lead them. This is the exact intent of the RH bill,” said San Pascual.
Last Saturday, the United Nations Population Fund reported that teenage pregnancies in the Philippines have risen by 70 percent over the past 10 years.
The UN panel added that the country ranks first among Southeast Asian countries, with a pregnancy rate of 53 for every 1,000 women aged 15 to 19.
San Pascual said the matter could have been avoided if the legislators had heeded the appeal of the RH bill advocates.
“Rising teenage pregnancy is one dire consequence of bypassing the RH bill, whose main intent is to inform and educate couples and young people on responsible sexual behaviors,” he said.
The RH bill is pending in the two chambers of Congress despite being included in the priority bills of the Aquino administration.
