Ma

How can I make my Nanay proud
By reciting in classes or by singing out loud?

By washing the dishes, or sweeping the floor,
By doing the laundry, or by manning the store?

How could I be of help to her in her young, and later, in her olden age?
By striving to finish college and earn a diploma, and, if possible, gain honors and be recognized on stage?

Buy her food (and medicines), pay the bills, when work has begun, and it (work) would have been a source of income..,
…Or by still plowing the field despite the academic degrees and excellence received, and not forsaking the menial chores at home.

By going to the market and buy food that will last a week (when in the ref, they’re stored)?
By driving her to church, to leisure trips, to be with the nice people around her whom she deals with and whom she dearly call as friends?

By seeking for her advice, when life’s at a crossroads for me to be guided and inspired?
By still becoming like a small child to her who needs to grow that in the early morning time, from her I’ll ask for pandesal and say, “Ma, where’s the bread?”
