The Constant Call
By Carlo G. Soldevilla
Written on Oct. 25, 2017

In the internet, particularly at FB, I’d been listening to the constant call of Gina Lopez to put an end or stop on the open- pit mining.

I hope, by now she could be loudly heard.

Our need to care for the environment is a must.

Gina is focused in developing verdant places, which may encourage tourism. This is one way of generating income.

We should choose not to destroy the land and its beauty.

Practically, Gina has a good advocacy.

Why is it that some, if not many of our leaders, with their desire to accumulate wealth, they have to destroy the Phlippines’ landscape which has a domino effect to the health of the people? The Filipinos’ public health is far more important than lofty salaries. We must cater for our health needs rather than concentrate on the need of foreigners who are investing in mining in our land or extracting our resources. Their (the aliens) view of development is not wholistic. Afer all is mined, they’ll leave the mining area so suddenly.

If you destroy the mountain, you destroy the river. If you destroy the river, you destroy the sea. If you destroy the sea, you destroy mother earth. If you destroy mother earth, you destroy the clouds. If you destroy the clouds, you destroy the whole universe. Is caring for ecology not important for you and me?

I tell you, we have not loved or showed love to mother earth that enough. Are we keen or focused on destroying her rather than caring for her?

A simple analogy is, you cannot eat the metal but you can eat the food. What blooms in the tropics, let it or let them grow. They should (grow).

Open pit mining will destroy the roots of the plants which are their channel or source of food when earth-balling and cutting of trees happen in the areas where this open pit mining operates. Always remember that plants or mother earth provide our bodies with food, energy, vitamins, minerals and medicine.

Aren’t we tired of having nickel or silver money by the kilos that we keep on mining nickel and silver and other substances in areas where our food source is located? If this is the case, it is a selfish act to do this, and selfishness always results to destruction.

The combination of the two: knowledge of laws and sometimes the word ‘practicality’ which protect these mining activities may only benefit the few, and these few one have short-term goals. Thus, they only bring or provide short-term solutions.

Correlating to longevity, we always desire for long—long life, long-term benefit, etc.. rather than the short term. It’s basically the same when we seek for solutions. We desire for what is permanent rather than what is temporary.

Caring for the environment has a long-term effect and this makes our mind and body healthy, having the food that we need and the good air that we breathe.

Why not let your heart and eyes enjoy the beautiful scenery which is a testament of G-d’s wonderful creation? By this, we create opportunities for life-long employment including decent housing or having a livable place to stay. Good health, achieved by being blessed by mother earth must be our priority or prime investment.

It’s time to redirect our path. Forest, ecology, mother earth are more healthy things to discuss.

Lastly, a quote or a line from Robert Frost I would like to share .., about the road less travelled. We rather choose this narrow path and live (happily ever after) than pass that big and wide road which only leads to destruction.
