One Sunday Afternoon
By Carlo G. Soldevilla
Written on November 6, 2017

One Sunday afternoon in the clubhouse of Dela paz Subdivision in Tarlac…, ..talking with a child whose name I never bothered to know (my apology).
But he or that child constantly played mini golf.

Yesterday, it was mini tourney between him and me and I came out to be the winner by just ‘one point’.

He possessed good skills to putt, and he can easily shoot or sink the ball.
After the game he found on the grass 5-peso coin..Well,
That’s not an earning but a gift, a blessing or luck
Finding something which you did not work for.. with it, he can buy snack(s).

After the game, we sat on the floor and talked
He shared about his family..that ‘..until this day I have never ever seen my dad.’

He is in Grade 5. They’re all 6 siblings in the family, and only his elder sister happened to see his dad before.

His mom does menial chores to support them and his schooling..I remember For(rest) Gump.

Maybe some people are born with good fate, and having good food on their table,
While this boy does not know what it means to be rich or to be that economically stable.

I gave him words of encouragement to keep attending school, and someday to finish his studies and become a teacher.

It was a contemplatative sharing, and later I was pondering, thinking how to ‘assign’ simple tasks for him to do with corresponding payment..

.. lIke placing soil on a 6x6 cellophane to be planted with a papaya tree or seedling..
..and charging one peso for each cellophane or plasic that’s filled with soil.

If he can finish filling the 10 plastic ‘container’ with soil in 7 minutes, he can make an earning of 10 pesos and that will be of help to him..

..Maybe, every time.. right after we play golf in the coming days.

This can be a good plan—for him to have a part time work which will not be burdensome for a little child like him.

Our goal, still, is to play golf.

We (mini-golfers) also ought to have a stronger camaraderie, thinking of ways how we can be of help to each other…even by teaching how to catch fish or earn a dime.

Note: Tarlac (Dela Paz Subdivision) Night Market is scheduled every Sunday from 4:00 pm until 9:00 p.m.
Sometimes, this simultaneously takes place with our (golfers) schedule.

The teeing ground is just adjacent to the market area (near the gate’s main entrance.).
