The Gift of Sand
By Carlo G. Soldevilla
Written on March 22, 2017

It was the brother-in-law (also a rabbi) of Rabbi Joseph who shared to me or to us about the story of Gamzo when we were studying the Noahide laws in Chabad Makati.

Israel was under the Babylonian rule before, and it was King Nimrod’s birthday that the rabbis (all gathered) had to choose who among them will be the one to give the Jewish gifts they gathered from the Jewish people to Nimrod. They drew lots and the luck or lot went to Gamzo.

Along his way to give the gift(s) , the night had come that Gamzo Nachum had to stay in the inn. While sleeping, the two inn-keepers came to his room, stole the gift(s) of gold and replaced it with sand.

The next day in Nimrod’s palace, Rabbi Nachum gave the gift to Nimrod, and Nimrod was insulted about the gift of sand.

King Nimrod immediately ordered Gamzo’s execution but while Gamzo was about to be hanged, Prophet Elijah appeared to one of Nimrod’s soldiers, telling him about the power of the sand.

The soldier whispered to the King what Prophet Elijah told him so the execution had to stop to test the sand’s ‘power’.

That time, there was a particular place that Nimrod can hardly conquer. They brought the sand there and while fighting, the sand was thrown in the air and the sand became swords destroying Nimrod’s enemies and making him able to conquer his enemy.

As a gift, Gamzo was given gifts of gold by Nimrod. Gamzo chose the same route where he passed in getting back home, and along his way back home, the same inn did Gamzo take.

The innkeepers, however were surprised about the king’s goodness to Gamzo, bestowing him gift/s so they asked Gamzo what did he do. Gamzo just simply said that he gave Nimrod the gift which he brought with him.

The two innkeepers, in haste, had an executive meeting done in private and they decided to do the same –to give King Nimrod gifts of sand.

The next day, Gamzo went back home while the two innkeepers decided to go to present their gift to King Nimrod. The gift of sand of the innkeepers was tested and it never turned into sword. The two innkeepers were executed.

Note:

Gamzo means ‘This, too, is for the good.’ This seems to have the same meaning to the verse written by St. Paul in
Romans 8:28
28 Furthermore, we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called in accordance with his purpose;
