Funny as I recall
During my elementary years
An exchange gift should happen before the year ends
There’s a standard price of the gift which you may exceed
But you must not go lower, buy it as decreed.

Viva voce or hands were happily raised
As to the standard price, P3.00 (three pesos) won!
The price was right but here comes the problem
P 2.95 was pegged for a special offer price.

How could I buy, there’s no exact three (P3.00)?
For no one can just buy at his liberty- (that’s lower than P3.00).
So P2.95 did not qualify
To the price that was made.
“It’s lacking. It’s lacking.”
I should say it straight.

So there was I , Accidentally I picked my teacher’s name -to where my gift should go.
She mastered the market price of those gifts-everything-that I did not know.
The P2.95 I just bought and repacked
So it won’t appear ‘special offer’ as it’s originally tagged.

On the day of judgment, my scheme was discovered
She held the gift with the 5 cents inside (the gift).
P2.95 plus the 5 cents is equal to three ( P3.00).
“Oh, mommy!, mommy! My teacher found me (What I did).”

After Christmas vacation (a year after), She called my name when our paths crossed.
Did I commit sin on her or something was discovered?
Now I recall, It’s all about the gift.
I should have kept the 5 centavos
And I should have not placed it inside the gift,
Then everything would have turned out right.

Since I was a child (that time) , I thought like a child (but not already this time?).
I was legalistic, the three (P3.00) must be three. (P3.00).
For I know how to count the number after two.
But woe is me, I just can’t move freely.
My teacher’s smile (when school time is back after the Christmas break) meant something.
Oh, she discovered me (my gift).

It (the gift I gave) must not be a piggy bank (because I placed the 5 cents inside), she should have said.
But the gifts I gave- She did find in the market, the powder , the towel
Including the comb—All would just cost P2.95 (special offer)
At the place where I went, she also did go.
But the good thing I bought the gift ahead of her
And that, I supposed, she did not know.

Heaven was falling down on me.
Of all the embarrassments, how could I be me?
My parents just gave me the exact money I needed.
It’s because they budgetted everything …There and at that moment I had dreaded.

I think I made it right because we agreed it was three (P3.00-the worth of the gift.).
But I can’t go anywhere because a year after she found me
If I just did not place the 5 cents inside.
It won’t be discovered --- that special offer price.

And now after counting
I should end this poem
Here I begin
One, Two, ______ .
