12 Rounds Poem, my gift for Manny Pacquiao in his fight against Rios, entitled 'Redemption' Redemption by Carlo G. Soldevilla Written on November 24, 2013 (a poem for Manny Pacquiao) Round 1 Perhaps, it was Yolanda's hit, you had made him sit. It was still first round, eleven rounds more were left. He was supposed to have stood right there on the canvass By the power of your punch, your opponent's lamp seemed out of gas. Round 2 You are not a mechanic but you had wrenched his face. A strong hand like Samson, practice bore fruits after many days. The nutrients of horse radish tree seem proven to be true. Malunggay is promoting good health, My co-Filipino, this is for you. Round 3 Rios was drawing near, maybe he dances ballet. It could be a sweet dance, but this is not the way. But you danced more like boogie, it could even be *tinikling Folk dance as they call it, but sweet dance is not boxing. Round 4 You were conferred a military rank, you were making use of pivot. A clock reversing in its turn, Rios was making **Ikot. A hook landed right in his nose- the punch like a bowling ball That strikes the pins completely, nothing's left in the hall. Round 5 Punches were thrown like lightning striking Rios' head, He could be as strong as bull but not just properly fed. Maybe, it's for fattening, not trimmed or fit for boxing An Australian kind, or Japanese kobe whose tender meat's for grilling. Round 6 Yes, Rios was like a heavy cow but you hit his brow. Sometimes, he acted like Jordan, lolling out his tongue. It could be his style to break your concentration. But you were not deceived, your fight's for the nation. Round 7 Rios can afford to smile suggesting he can accept your blow. Speed really matters, like sudden flush on the toilet flow. Rios appeared not so serious, was it a sarcastic smile? The punches of Haina, of course could have made him sigh. Round 8 And so the world stood still, the machines of passenger jeepneys stilled. The people awed on the punches of Yolanda, Dionisia's Hermes bag to be billed? Rios appeared weak, he leaned on you so you can carry him- a trick! But victory was near, the glorious win of the bell ringing seemed to be quick. Round 9 A super-imposing 'art' it could have been, the shrill of Dionisia's voice, You turned Rios into a punching bag, the professional boxer was his choice. He could not have been mistaken to endure twelve rounds with you Should he lose, he could accept-This is the best bout, he knew. Round 10 Rios appeared like a loser, He made you his weighing scale. To 'carry' him demands an energy, it could make you weak as well. If Dionisia could just go up,She would tell Rios: "Don't make my son your sofa bed." He looked very, very tired. He embraced and leaned on your arms instead. Round 11 To Rios: You gave Manny a free float, you carried him like a baby. You clipped Manny's arms, what's lacking was a lullaby. The truth is you got lots of punches, like tomato, your head was swollen You might have thought of an idea, 'How about becoming born again?' Round 12 Right after the fight, the judges declared Manny's win. His prayer still mattered to G-d, perhaps his plea...not exactly that he would win. But victory came in pure, clean slate, Manny Pacquiao has once again inspired our nation. Tacloban and Leyte are waiting, would you call this win 'Redemption'? ------- * a Filipino folk dance **a 360-degree turn (like UP Ikot) Note: I wrote this poem right after seeing the twelve (12) rounds fight of Manny against Rios. Thanks G-d for both players who inspired me to write this poem. No offense meant or intended in my poem's content. Thank you. Copyright 2013 by Carlo G. Soldevilla. All right reserved.
