Perhaps it was David’s sling which Gloria used by way of consolidating friendly forces,
Gloria had removed the stairs which Alvarez stepped upon. Then she brought Alvarez to the abyss.

Both of them had a separate goal: What I read was ‘Alvarez was making enemies (?) while Gloria was consolidating forces?’
Alvarez was overly concerned about ‘trying to invade a city’, while Gloria, with Sara’s (?) help, was attacking Alvarez’ not-so-solid foundation – his home base (Achilles’ heel).
