NCAA WIDENS BOWL ELIGIBILITY

The NCAA's Board of Directors on Thursday approved a new selection process for bowl games that includes a possibility for teams that finish 5-7 to be selected to bowls.

Under the new measure, if there are not enough bowl-eligible teams, or if a bowl cannot be filled by its conference affiliations, the open spots would be filled through a six-tier tiebreaking process.

Ordinarily, teams need to finish with a minimum .500 winning percentage with at least six wins -- five against other Football Bowl Subdivision teams -- to be bowl eligible. A sixth win against a Football Championship Subdivision team only counts if the FCS school meets scholarship requirements.

Now, FIRST consideration will go to 6-6 teams with a win against any FCS teams, REGARDLESS OF SCHOLARSHIPS, then 6-6 teams with two wins against FCS schools.

Any early thoughts on 2012? I see Duquesne as the clear favorite with Patterson and McCoy leading the offense and Kona Bell Dozie Richert leading the defense..............any thoughts????

Congratulations to the Albany Great Danes!

Total domination over the visiting Duquesne Dukes this past week.

Albany is in the driver's seat for the NEC Championship.

I tried to register for the Albany forum to post congratulations over there, but I guess that their admin was worried that I was signing up to talk smack on their board. Who would do such a thing??

So, I'll have to be content using this new NEC board to tell the Albany faithful what a fine job the Great Danes did last Saturday. They made a really good Duquesne team look really bad.

The NEC continues its usual bare-knuckle brawl for the conference championship!

Coffee,
Thanks for creating this message board.

Wanted to say that I am a St. Francis fan, but I just started a master's program at Duquesne, so I am quickly becoming a Dukes fan as well.

Beware of the Great Danes looking for revenge. They are beginning to gel and can never be taken lightly with their size and the athletes they have.

Sacred Heart "upset" Dartmouth 24-21!

I'm starting to think that the 24-12 Monmouth victory over Central Connecticut State may not be the "upset" that many of us thought.

Albany whooped on Columbia, as expected, 44-21.

Bryant edged out Wagner 30-28 at home. Bryant may be hurting, but there is still some bite left in those Bulldogs!

The NEC should win a couple today against some very tough competition.

Richmond over Wagner
Dayton loses to Duquesne
North Dakota State over St. Francis
Bryant over American International
Liberty loses to Robert Morris
James Madison over Central Conn. St.

Great win for the Dukes over Dayton to avenge the Colonial's loss last week. The Dukes really should be 2-0 ooc but let last week's game get away to a weaker Bucknell team.

This was a disappointing opening week for NEC teams. The only victories came at the expense of another NEC team (Wagner over St. Francis 38-28), and a Division II team (CCSU over Southern Connecticut 35-21).

There were a couple of real heart-breakers: Duquesne's last minute loss to Bucknell 27-26, and Albany's loss to Colgate in overtime 37-34.

Two losses this week to PFL teams!

Marist topped Sacred Heart 20-7, and Dayton won their ninth in a row over Robert Morris 19-13.

Three losses this week to Patriot League teams.

In addition to the Duquesne loss to Bucknell and the Colgate victory over Albany, Monmouth dropped their contest to Top-25 ranked Lehigh 49-24.

Putting the cherry on top of this week of frustration was Bryant's defeat at the hands of Maine from the CAA, 28-13.

In the end, not one single victory over a non-NEC Division I team this week.

Not good.

Certainly a bad week for the NEC from a win-loss perspective.

I think it's fair to say a few things about the matchups:

- Lehigh is going to be a very good team this year and will likely win the PL.
- Maine has 60+ schollys and Bryant is still ramping up in the NEC.
- We knew SHU would struggle without Fink, and Marist isn't that bad.
- Dayton owns RMU. Its a great series, but its not much of a shock.
- The Dukes dropped a very winnable game, but it was close and I have to hope it isn't a sign of something begger.
- Albany once again showed they are a great program and almost pulled of the upset. Heart breaking loss.

I don't predict an FCS win for the NEC in week 2 either :(

Bryant played a lot better than the outcome. They outgained Maine, had possession and looked more physical and stronger after the first quarter.

Bryant had 2 INTs in the red zone and a missed FG attempt. To top it off Bryant had their starting QB, 3 out of 5 starting OLine men, and both starting DBs all out with injuries for the first game. 1 Oline is done for the season, our QB is out for 5 weeks, the other 2 Oline men are out 2-3 more weeks and the information about the DBs wasn't released.

Unfortunately Bryant had the chance to have a great season, but it looks like it may be a 5 or 6 win season with all the injuries. However, they did hold their own and dominated the second half (and Maine had its starters in the whole game).

Gate is very good. Found a qb to go with OL and Eachus. D , however, some good players, but lost a lot. Biddle playing a lot of frosh on his 2 deep. Very unusual. D may improve but I suspect it will be wildly inconsistent for 1st half of the year
