Don't think there ever was a "nationwide" minimum age, but most of the states did have a minimum age of 21 until the early 70s or so when everyone went crazy with dropping the minimum drinking age to 18. At that time, at least a few states dropped the minimum age for sworn officers to between 18 and 20. Don't know if the ages went back up like the drinking age did in those states, but it wasn't uncommon in the mid to late 70s to see sworn officers that were only 18 to 20 years of age. At about that time, the big push for police officer certification also swept over the country, and states were setting up law enforcement standards and certification programs. Until this time, in a lot of smaller departments, the only thing you needed was to be sworn in by the Chief or some city official and you were a cop. No academy or formal training. I don't know of any states that don't have some sort of credentialing system now, and most have a minimum age.
