In N.Y. years back one had to be 18 to take the Civil Service exam and 19 at time of appointment. Now its 20 but make allowances for military service, 2yrs college, combination of work ie: police dispatch, etc.

I started work for my PD at 18 in dispatch, spent the last 25 as an officer.

I was told you have to be 21 to become a peace officer because of federal law restricting handguns to a minimum age of 21. You can be hired at to go to the Academy at 20 though, at least that's what they do here locally. (NT)Giant16:49:25 11/01/02 Fri
