Dave I legally owned a handgun at age 18 in NY. It was licensed and unrestricted. I was allowed to carry it since way back then you were the only one alone in the station house at night. I stil have that little Chief Special my later partner sold me G-R-H-S. I later on had to buy a Model 19 357 since we did not have dept. issued firearms. Its funny when I look back to then I had gotten out of HS and worked as a laborer for the Rec. Dept. When the then Chief said "kid what are you going to do when it gets cold". Hell, I didn't know so he offered me a job. It was real fun working grave yard and going to college classes in the morning. I think I slept more than a few mornings in the parking lot of the college. As I think forward when the age changed to 21 we had a few guys who couldn't legally go out for choir practice. I guess back then being 18 with a whole lot of responsibility & maturity must have stood out since the "war" was winding down and the draft was ending. Knowing what was on the horizion then when you were 18 made a big impression on many of my friends then, it was school or packing your bags for the army. We grew up early, not like today.
