Yup, I also bought a gun at 18 from another cop. There was no licensing or registration. But if (and when) I wanted a new gun, purchased at a gun shop, I had to have my mother buy it. The Federal law on purchasing (legally - not from a friend) a weapon is still 21 today.

As for Giant's comments, there are plenty of places even today that restrict being hired as a police officer to those aged 21 and above. It was only during that brief period in the 70s that local governments did not know what or how to get around the fact that the new age limit was 18. It was only in later years that local governments determined they could pass legislation in reference to drinking, etc. Same goes for setting minimum age limits. What had always been taken for granted that you had to be an adult to be a cop was blown away when the age laws changed.
