In reply to: Bearhawke in Az 's message, "It sounds to me that Mr Budeir WAS in a restricted area without permission-----------not in a public place...........he deserved to be checked out IMHO" on 20:28:22 09/03/02 Tue

It wasn't fenced, it wasn't posted, it was nothing but the AREA that the cars park in.

I'm sorry, but I have to say I disagree with the paranoia here. Syrian, Iraqi, Afghani, black, white, Blue Cheese, he has the right to take a picture of a publicly owned police vehicle.

I cannot believe this idiot isn't going to stand up for himself. Instead, he is pleading guilty. The trespass and disorderly charge stem from a "lawful order" which in my opinion wasn't lawful.

How do you order a citizen out of a police station? If he creates a disturbance, you arrest him but, where I am from, you cannot disturb the peace of a cop. They have no peace nor can they expect it. It's like the rookies I used to see trying to arrest someone for harassment... cops cannot be harassed.

This is a public facility, for crying out loud. He has the right to be there and carry out his business. If his business is taking photos of cars, then so be it. This department needs to get real.

It's real funny how the Feds can scream about "racial profiling" when it pertains to blacks... but it is okay to racially profile a mid-easterner in the name of "homeland security". Sorry, can't have your cake and eat it too.

Now, if you're not too board, this story has brought up another memory. A few years ago, I took the kids across the border into Mexico while vacationing in South Texas. I had been shooting pictures on the drive (including some that show up on copcar). I had the camera strapped to my neck as I went through the border back into the US. The INS agent stopped me and asked if I had taken pictures of the border facility. He wanted to see the pictures. Luckily it was a brand new camera and I had no idea how to review the pictures. He was ready to pull me into that "special area" and even talked about arrest. Later, not more than 1/4 mile away, I met a Border Patrol officer who posed his Expedition for me on the banks of the border. I related the story to him and he informed me that there was no such offense and that the INS agent was way off base even asking me to see the photographs.

Man, lets not forget this is America.
