The manner in which you describe, shooting covertly from your truck, pretending to take nature photos and then quickly snapping the car, is one good way to raise an officer's suspicion should he see you. It's that type of activity that will get you questioned at the very least.

The incident I described in Nevada was taken from the drivers seat of a rental because I was doing paper work while I waited for cars to drive by, though I made no attempt to conceal my camera from the view of the officer.

While taking photos, I make no bones about it. I don't try and hide what I'm doing. I act like I belong there. And if there is anyone around, even if the car is on a public street, I do ask or explain what I am doing. Otherwise, you are apt to get into a "contempt of cop" situation.
