My take of reading all the opinions on the board and the story is... Say he was white anglo-saxon caucasion and taking pictures of a parked marked police car. Would the police have acted so diligently given the circumstances? What if it was before 9/11? What was the officers attitude to the photographer?? What if he was some 10yr old with an instamatic? What if he took the picture on a public street?

I have been in the public safety field for 17 yrs. I know there is alot of precautions to take and there is alot of hype over 9/11. The media feeds on it. Sure there are issues with security. Our department has told us to be careful. Use good judgement. Not allowing someone to take a picture of a marked suburban car in a parking lot is not exactly going to lead to terroism. I would worry if someone was taking picutures of a big city police car or fire vehicle. It don't take a rocket scientist to "dummy" up a big city car.

At the Firehouse we get "reports" of people of "middle eastern decent" going to firehouses and asking questions about the equipment and opereations. Most times its a runor or hoax, or some family of a "non caucasion" who stopped to look at the fire engine with a 4 year old. That doesn't mean we can't answer the door for any " middle eastern looking " person who asks for directions.

It sounds like a paranoid cop who took a little too much action and a college student who didn't know enough to not come back when told not to.

Parts: you brought up an interesting point there: my original surname is a fairly common Middle Eastern one...............although I am NOT Arabic.............if anything I look stereotypically Scandinavian which admittedly has 'saved' me from lots of potential problems........political correctness be damned (NT)Bearhawke in Az08:25:46 09/11/02 Wed
