I've found the Nova irons to be very playable from the rough. I think that the key is even though you use a sweeping swing it shouldn't be as sweeping as if you were hitting a fairway wood or wood hybrid. I even tend to come down into the ball slightly which makes them great from either the rough or closely cut fairways and hard-pan.

Jeremy has hit the nail on the head. Even though you are using a sweeping swing you are still incorporating an iron club-head which does not slice through heavy rough like a wood type club-head. If you hit slightly down on the ball when in the rough I believe that you will see a world of difference. The same holds true when chipping from the rough or playing from a very close cut fairway lie.

Even though the Nova hybrid Irons are designed for a sweeping swing, it does not mean "scooping" the ball. You must bear in mind that when the ball is sitting on a plush fairway it is actually sitting up on 1/2" of grass, or effectively, teed up 1/2". You can get away with "scooping" the ball with this type of lie but it is nearly impossible to hit from a very tight lie using that method. In every case the club-head should brush the ground (not the top of the grass) exactly where the ball is sitting and not behind the ball which, like any iron or wood, will cause the club-head to deflect upwards.
