Subject: About "Consumption"

I have heard this term for the disease many times, a couple of times on LHOTP, and on a few other old shows. I have always taken it to mean, Pneumonia...but it sounds like an alcoholic disease. If I remember correctly.. the old doctor on the tv series, that helped Jennie gain back her speech and motor skills after near her drowning experience, was dying from that, and also the Widow Sanders too? If that is so, it couldn't be an alcohol thing, so did it mean pneumonia? Anyone know for sure?

My grandmothers mother and her stepmother both died of consumption back in the 1800's. She lost her mother to it and after her father remarried to a lovely woman she said, it took her as well. She said there was nothing they could do about it, once they'd caught it, I remember she told my mum that they just faded away, it must have been really awful for them back then.

I was always a bit unclear about what 'Consumption' actually was. It sounded like a slowish wasy to go and very drawn out, which is sad. In one of the Anne of Green Gables books Ruby Gillis passes away because of it - it always makes me cry when I read about it. I have been going through my 'Anne' books and my 'Laura' books lately as it is the summer holidays and I have had time to spare.

The one thing I have always wondered is WHY were people put in Sanitorium's once they contracted Consumption. This happened to Frank McCourt (author Angela's Ashes) when he was a child and I have seen it written many times that people with the disease were put in the Sanitoriums. Maybe I am confused about what a Sanitorium was - I always thought it a mental institution but was it also a hospital? DOes this post make ANY sense?

I think it's because it's contagious, so they wanted to isolate people. Sanitarium in the dictionary is defined as an institution for the care of invalids or convalescents, or even a quiet resort where people go to rest and regain health. So it sounds as if it differs from a hospital in that there is no medical treatment. Probably over the years sanitarium evolved into meaning a mental hospital, as at one time I'm sure there was no real treatment for mental health problems, just isolation.
