Subject: PQ, Week 5
Mr. Older has a beard! I'm not sure if he always had it and just didn't notice, or if he grew it since the last episode! Don't ever ask me to look over a police lineup, LOL!
The younger couple got a stove for their cabin. It looks old-fashioned, but they said it's new, as a real old one would be a fire hazard. It's just for heat, although it looks as you could heat a pot of water for coffee on it or something. They had to spend a lot of time chinking the wall of the cabin with moss from a pond to fill the cracks.
The two couples built a small barn (looks about 10 x 12 at most) for the cow and chikens. Apparently, the horses are going to spend the winter outside.
They had their first snow, of what the narrator said is going to be a record for snow for the winter! The wheels on the wagon pick up snow just like when making a snow man, so the two men both had to go in the wagon, one to drive the team, the other to keep brushing the snow off the wheels, so it wouldn't fall off, and maybe break the wheels as the wheels would go over it.
The couples seem to be getting along better. Of course, with winter, they are spending more time in their own cabins, as days are shorter. They do work well together in the day time and have meals together, but then the young couple goes to their own cabin right after supper.
The older women said they would like for the young couple to stay and play cards but she laughed and said they (the young couple) wanted to go off and make whoppee!
They've been hunting and at first got absolutely nothing. They have to use this old gun that takes about 2 minutes just to load one shot. Finally, they got a partridge, which yielded about enough meal for "a stirfry" as the younger woman put it. Eventually, they did get some more birds, but no deer yet, though there have been a lot of deer around.
They spent a lot of time cutting wood for the winter.

LOL about the young couple ;-) You know, I still can't find this darn show anywhere?! I am glad you have been writing a synopsis. What day/time do you watch it? Maybe I can search my local PBS more extensively and see if I can't find it that way!

I see the show Saturday evening 7-7:45 PST. Now that I've looked things up on it, I think it's the Oregon PBS showing it in re-runs. It sounds as if it originally aired about 2 years ago. Maybe you could contact your public service TV station and ask that they show it in your area in the near future? It really is a good program.

Thanks - I may do that. I searched my local PBS AND the TV Guide AND the guide on my TV - nothing, nada, zip, zilch. Speaking of PBS shows - mine just aired Manor House which was outstanding. That was made 2 years ago also - but if you have the chance (and haven't already) you should watch it :-)

I haven't seen Manor House, but read about it. Sounds good. It is on late here--I should tape it.
I read this morning about a show where firemen, policemen, etc., will live in the second century time period! One comment was, nevermind the armor, wait until they find out what 2nd century underwear is like, lol.

Manor House -- Jennifer, 10:13:30 05/07/03 Wed
LOL - that should be funny!
I think Manor House is very much worth recording. It was really facinating and truly supports my theory that you can't take a 21st Century mentality and impose 19/20 Century ideals on them. The servants really began rebelling and couldn't take the work load. 2 Scullery Maids quit in the first week! And let me tell you - the family who lived in the Manor really adapted to their roles and didn't want to go home. I think I cried through the whole last 20 minutes of the show - I didn't want it to end!

Thanks Ann for keeping us up to date on Pioneer Quest.
It's good that the couples are getting on better. I think it's wise of the younger couple to go back to their own place instead of staying around to play cards. Good on them if they do want to "make whoppee"!! But I'm sure that aside from that, it is also because they already spend more than enough time with this couple and they must want time with just each other.
Imagine having to hunt for, shoot, and prepare your own meat like that - that would be a real experience (one that I am glad I'm not going through!)
Are any of the 4 people complaing much yet and dying to get back to life as they once knew it??

They don't sound as though they are ready to go back to "real life" yet, but the younger woman expressed concern that it might get boring in the winter. She said until that point they were so busy all day (and days of course were longer) that they just fell into bed at night. But with shorter days and bad weather, they worked fewer hours, (which of course was why they had to work so hard in the summer--to prepare for the winter). I imagine she'll find they'll be pretty busy anyway, maybe sewing or knitting or something, if nothing else.
