It's really winter now. And just as they had record-breaking rain in June, they are having record-breaking cold in the winter. Lots of day -30 degrees. Older couple, whose roof inside was like a vaulted ceiling, put in beams so they could drape a tarp over them to lower the ceiling and conserver heat. Young couple put blankets on inside walls and built a sort of second doorway around the front door so all the heat would not escape every time they opened the door.
The younger man finally shot a deer, and the older man had already, so they would have lots of meat for the winter. They borrowed an antique sleigh from a neighbor to replace wheels on wago so they could get around better in the snow.
The women shot a partridge, which was enough for one meal.
The older man got sick, and the show's producers brought in a doctor, who insisted on taking him to a hospital because he could hardly walk 50 feet without having to stop. They were afraid he had heart disease, in which case he'd have to leave the homestead. He was in the hospital for 8 days, having tests and recuperating from what turned out to be a viral infection. Back in the old days, he very likely would have died on the homestead. But he went back, but had to take it easy. His wife took on a lot of his chores.
They had a visit from school children on a class trip, who were duly impressed with how they lived.
For Christmas they all made each other home-made gifts such as soap, candles, potholders. The younger man gave his wife a kitten (from a nearby farm) which she loved. He made a basket for it, then tied a piece of yarn with a pine cone on the end for the kitten to play with. The kitten just kept batting at that pine cone over and over!
In previews for the next show, the couples were saying that because the time to leave was only a few months away, they were starting to think about being back in the "real" world and had to work hard to try to not think about it, because they wanted to keep the experience going.
