Subject: Rose's San Francisco House

Does anyone know if the Vallejo St house still exists? I'm going to be in San Francisco in July and thought I'd go and have a look.

I believe it still does - quite a while ago someone saw it. I was wondering the same thing though - actually what the address is because I am going to SF in a few months too and wanted to go see it.

According to "Laura Ingalls Wilder Country" by William Anderson, Rose's SF house still stands at 1018 Vallejo St. Please let us know if you do see the house, Jayne!

Has anyone ever been to the LIW Room in the library in Pamona, CA? It has a permanent exhibit of a collection of LIW manuscript material and memorabilia.

Zoie and Laurie went up there 2 years ago. (I use "up" as it is about 3 hrs north of me). Delilah and I had talked about going sometime too. It is really small but quite neat. They have some letters and dolls and one of the orig. manuscripts (can't think of which one right now!) But at the time they were at the library no one was really around so they asked and were able to actually TOUCH the manuscript! I think there was also a blank tablet there. I am going to have to ask them about that trip again - memory fails the details :-( Oh - and whilst in Pomona they went in search of Maude Hart Lovelace's house (Betsy/Tacy writer). They found it and had the nerve to go up to the door and the current owner let them inside They also ate at the diner where she would commonly eat at.

I spelled Pomona wrong too and didn't even realize it! That must have been so cool to have been able to touch the manuscript. Bet that doesn't happen every day.
Wow, I'm surprised they were let inside Maude Hart Lovelace's house. That was nice of the real owner.
I need to travel more! One of these years I'd like to see some of the LIW sites.

Thanks. I'm using West From Home as a guide and I'll try to visit as many of the places that Laura did on her visit. Though she certainly had more time than I do - I'm only there for 5 nights! Though I don't have the Exposition to visit.

If i go to California again I am going to try and find the house there. I am going to Burr Oak for LIW Days the first weekend in June for 3 days next weekend. I can not wait William Anderson and other authors are suppose to be there. Plus where were saying is only 2 miles from Burr Oak and its in the country on a farm. I am really looking forward to this.

I am really glad for those of you that have been able to see the Laura sites! I would really love to see them all. Another place I would love to see is the spot in Simi Vally California that Little House on the Prairie, the tv series, was shot. I would be in awe of that, and from what I have heard on this board, I think, the "Ingalls" house still stands but is owned by someone and has it on his property? How I would love to sweet talk that fella into letting me have a look!

I'd love to see that house too. I wonder if it is just a shell used for the exterior shots, or if the inside looks like what we saw on the show.

Ann, I am thinking that it looks like what we saw inside, except maybe for the new kitchen that was added on in later episodes..At least I HOPE it is that way.. what a bummer if it isn't.:-( If you think about it, there wasn't a whole lot of extra things for the inside, so it wouldn't have been that hard to film it. Ya think?

I got to thinking about the inside of the Ingalls house on the tv series... does anyone ever remember seeing the wall that would be on the right as you walk into the house? I don't... so maybe that WOULD mean that the inside of the house WAS a prop? That thought shatters my image of the house... oh the pain! LOL.

I always figured the inside was filmed at a studio. I mean, it was always so dark in the house (as it would have been in real life, I suppose), and except for a bit of wall around the door and window on the same side of the house, I don't recall ever seeing a wall from inside. The background was just darkness.
You'd see the family at the table, the fireplace in back of them, but on either side of the fireplace, I think it was just dark. Then occasionally we'd see Ma & Pa's bed area, or the girls up in the loft, but not much more than that, really.

FYI

I'm watching an episode right now on CMT and they've shown the "right" wall! It's the episode "In the Big Inning".

What is on the wall? Anything? Is that the wall where the stove is?

No..it didn't show anything on it. Just bare. It's the wall that would be on your right side as you enter the house. The wall behind "Mary's dinner spot".

:)
