Subject: Pioneer Girl

Well, I finally had a chance to read Pioneer Girl. It was good. It was hard to put it down at night. It was strange reading her life in one story instead of a bunch of books. While reading I did a lot of comparing between it and the series, such as people that were the same or different. I noticed the 3 people that were combined to make Nellie in the series. Also things that Laura wrote about in P.G. that weren't in her books and vice versa. I did find it intersting that in P.G. that Laurs still didn't use Almanzo's real age. I thought she may have. The people who were with them during the long winter were lazy(I don't remember their name right now). She had an excuse but he should've done move considering that they practically invited themselves in. I can't belive that Grace sat on Mary's lap most of the time. It could be the era, kids weren't as active but I couldn'r imagine my son sitting there day in day out. He won't for 10 minutes. I guess though if it's cold and theres nothing else to do. I still wonder about the outhouses/chamber pot. It definiteley wasn't proper to write about it then. I still wonder though, how much did the house stink in the winter when they were stuck inside.
When I should it to my mother she said she wants to borrow it when I was done. I wassurprised. I didn't think she was into it. When she saw how much it was she was shocked. She couldn't belive I spent that much.

What I noticed was the lack of dialogue as compared to the books. Certainly Rose must have guided Laura after the editor suggested she break the story down into separate books to make them more "story-like." It would be interesting to see the correspondence back and forth between Laura and Rose and to be a fly on the wall when they talked.
The descriptions sounded much as they do in the books.
