Subject: Laura & Cap (shiver)

Did cap ever admit to "liking" Laura? We know she had a crush on him, but did he have a crush on her...at any time...?

I don't think Cap could ever admit to "liking" Laura, even if he did, because of Almanzo being one of his friends. If Almanzo knew something like that it might've caused a rift between the two boys.

Could you imagine if it was Cap who married Laura? Would Laura ever have left DeSmet, wrote her books? She would've been a young widow.

Yes, her life would have been different for sure, but I am thinking that maybe she would have written the books anyway, since writing was within her, and her child hood would have still been the same. I wonder if she had gotten together with Cap... would she have still ended up with Almanzo after Caps death? Seems that her and Almanzo were destined to be together...they were married a long time. A destiny is a destiny... what do yall think?

Cap might not have died if he had married Laura -- more than just that one part of history might have been rewritten!

I think Laura and Cap would have had FUN as a couple; Almanzo was so into farming and Cap might have been more of a free spirit and wanderer (like Pa). Cap didn't take out a homestead when he was 21, for example.

Then again, Almanzo seemed to be really close to Pa, and I wonder how much he really had to do with Laura and Almanzo getting together?

I also wonder if the fact that Cap had a widowed mother and two sisters made him less desirable? Maybe girls figured they'd be put to work in the boarding house as Cap's wife and didn't want any part of it.

I wish Cap had been part of the tv show, though.

[> Re: Laura & Cap (shiver) -- Ann, 11:21:38 10/02/02 Wed

Laura liked moving around as a kid and (I think) she said at one time that she'd never planned on marrying a farmer. But once they got to Rocky Ridge, I don't think she had any desire to move around. I think she liked putting down roots and would have in DeSmet if the tree claim had proved up and the weather had not been bad for Almanzo. So marrying a free spirit might not have been a good match. And marrying a guy whose mother and sisters would have been in her every day life might not have worked so well either. I think Laura definitely liked being the one in charge.
But it would have been fun to see some kind of relationship with Laura and Cap on the show. It could have always hinted at romance, but then had Laura take up with Almanzo and Cap with someone and they would still remain good friends. Of course, there could have been a few interesting episodes with Almanzo and/or a girlfriend of Cap's misunderstaning Laura and Cap's friendship before everything got sorted out. :)

[> Interesting Points -- delilah, 23:51:20 10/02/02 Wed

I wonder how often Laura thought of Cap throughout her life. I wonder if she had regrets. I suppose if she really wanted Cap she could have gotten him. Laura wasn't THAT bad looking, was she? Or did her personality not attract Cap? Or did it, but Cap knew his good friend was developing feelings for her. Is there a story to this, or just gossip?

Did Cap marry? If so, when did he start courting his wife? Maybe he and Laura were always "just good friends" and there was no romantic interest. I agree, if Laura had been truly interested in him romantically she certainly would have let him know one way or another, and she looks very attractive in pictures of her as a girl/young woman.

Thanks, Nancy
So either he liked the carefree life, or (TV version here) he was pining away for Laura. :)
He did die young though, so maybe he just didn't have marriage on his mind at that point.

Wasn't it a farming accident, or did I read that he developed the illness that was going around from being in contact with everyone, by helping the farmers during a crisis? Don't hit me now, for not knowing for sure, lol. And how old was he?

He died in a threshing accident when he was not very old. Somewhere, there is a very interesting web page all about him - it came up on FG board not long ago, and now I can't find it...

That was interesting, and how sad that he had to die so young. It is confirmed tho, that Laura noticed Cap first, but decided she wanted to be with Almanzo instead.. It isn't really explained whether she set her sites on Almanzo because Cap was courting Mary Powers, or if she had made this decision before that fact.

There is another photo of Cap and other info.

If that's true how sad!(even though it was common back then) I wonder if any of her grandchildren or great-granchildren realize that it's here in the books.
I have to agree with Ellie, Cap does look older in his picture much older than 26.

[> Laura Cap -- Ann, 11:22:03 10/07/02 Mon

It occurred to me that maybe one of the reasons Laura included Cap in her LHOP books was *because* he died so young and she wanted to memorialize him, whether it was because he was just a friend or something more.

Good point - he probably stuck more in her (brilliant) memory anyway - I think I would certainly remember someone who died in a tragic accident more than someone who simply moved away.

That was a good point Ann.

Back on the Laura/Cap note- what do you suppose Mary Power was like? Since Cap went with her, she must've been his type. Do you think Laura was to..opinionated (sp?) for him?

I do wonder about that. It's one thing to be friends to live with an opinionated person, quite another to live with one, lol!

[> Cap's Personality...& Laura's -- delilah, 01:46:29 10/08/02 Tue

I wonder if Laura was a little uptight for him? It seemed that he was rather out-going, as was Mary. I can see Laura being a little uptight. BUT with her family she was pretty spunky. She didn't seem to like pre-Madonna's (Nellie). She seemed to like people as "tough as nails".

She picked Almanzo for a reason. I suppose they justed were meant to be.

Maybe she just liked to look at him, she did describe him as goodlooking but maybe she didn't think of him as more than good looking. And maybe she didn't want to compete with mary powers because she must have liked Cap too. Or maybe She wanted Almanzo and not cap.But still she remembered him because he was so cute and funnie and because he was one of her best friends beau. And wasn't it Cap who thew her the ball on her first day at school?
