Pa left Walnut Grove to work on the railroad after June 1, 1879. Ma and the girls followed in September. The winter in the Surveyors' House was the winter of 1879-1880. Pa filed on the homestead in February 1880 (actually, it was on the 19th, just two days ago!).

What's really pathetic is that I can come up with all this Ingalls trivia and this week when Ginny had to do a family tree, I had NO idea what her grandmother's maiden name was. But since it was John's side of the family, I didn't let it bother me for too long. (g)
