I think you are missing the point, Gate Raider. I do not look down my nose at Albany, Wagner, and Stony Brook because they are inferior fb programs. Hell, we have a losing record (and 5-game losing streak) against such teams in the decade we've been playing them, including some embarrassing routs. It's just that if we are going to get our ass kicked in an OOC game I would rather it be against Navy or Syracuse than Bryant or Central Connecticut State. A loss against Bryant hurts recruiting and results in diminished interest in the program from alums and students. Recruits are psyched at a chance to play in the Dome, and games against FBS schools engender interest even when they're bad losses.

There hasn't been a "change in the football landscape", there's been a deterioration of Colgate's program against virtually everybody, for reasons well elaborated on this board but can be summed up by saying the school really doesn't want a strong program. You mention Army, Navy, and Syracuse as schools we can no longer play because of the "change in landscape". In the last couple of years Army has lost to Fordham, Yale, and Stony Brook; Navy to FCS (at the time) Troy and W Kentucky; and Syracuse had narrow victories against Villanova and a lousy Rhode Island team. You seem to be saying as Colgate's program deteriorates we should tailor our schedules to this deterioration. Army, Navy, and Buffalo are too good; probably also Furman and UNH. Let's play Bryant and Monmouth, and when they get too good maybe Robert Morris and St Francis.

Here's another suggestion - as we transition into the scholarship era let's raise our standards, in terms of scheduling and performance. If good academic FCS schools such as William & Mary, Furman, and Richmond can schedule games against powerful SEC and ACC teams, surely we can play Army and Navy.

I am not against playing Navy, Army, Syracuse and similar programs or top FCS schools. What bothers me is starting each year with two or three losses which, I don't think, builds the players' or team's confidence. It's made worse if the first three games are away as fan interest in Colgate football wanes. This year is a good example. We start with three losses and the next home game is 6 weeks away. What the heck kind of schedule is that? Five weeks with no home game. Fans will have forgotten Colgate has a football team by then and it will be November and the weather will have turned. And, can you believe Colgate scheduled the Cornell hockey game on the same day as the Lehigh football game? Colgate needs people in the seats and it is winning teams with home games that put them there. Sparse attendance at games means no one cares and the program is weakened and eventually in jeopardy. I am more than happy to have an Albany, Stony Brook, Wagner for an early season home game

We've started the year 0-3 before and had very successful seasons, so don't give up the ship. I agree about the long layoff between home games this year. We definitely need more games in early fall to bring out the fans and take advantage of the weather - which will only go downhill come November. Everyone will be thinking hockey by then anyway.

I have the utmost respect for what the Monmouths and Bryants of the world have achieved football-wise, I just don't like to see their names on our schedule. Army, Navy or Air Force looks better and is a more attractive draw for recruits and alums/fans.
