Hi Ivy,

It's great to hear from you. It's hard to find time to visit here sometimes. I've been busy with school stuff too.

What paper do you have to write? Congrats on the all A's. That's really great. I've been getting mostly A's too but I did bet a couple of B's on some math tests. Not my strongest subject. Have you taken that reading test yet? I hope you got the 100 you need.

Our school uses a demerit system as a kind of discipline system. Most stuff is only 1 demerit but you can get more for more serious stuff. Our school handbook lists what you can get a demerit for & how many you get for each infraction. It's kind of up to the teachers if you get one. We have to carry a demerit card with us & when a teacher asks for it when you mess up you better have it because that's a demerit too. It sounds worse than it really is. But I thought the demerit was unfair because it was only the 2nd day of school. I thought detention was enough. It's the only one I have so far. My brothers both have 3 already. Sean got his 3rd one today but I'm not sure why. He isn't talking to me right now. We had this big fight after school Monday & he's still mad at me. He'll get over it.

We won our game on Saturday so now we have 4 wins, no losses & 1 tie. Our next game is Friday. I'm not really all that good at violin. I didn't play for several months then started again last month. I've been practicing though & a lot of it is coming back but I'm not all that good. My music teacher seems to think I have this hidden talent & has me trying some different stuff but I struggle with it. I like it though & I'm going to keep playing. I know I will get better.

We have been taking the Terra Nova & Explore tests this week. It's been exhausting. The Explore tests are to help us decide the best courses to take in high school. The Terra Nova tests are an achievement test. I don't remember when we get the results back. I'll be taking entrance exams at the high schools I want to apply to early next year. My parents want me to narrow it down to 3 schools by November.

Will you be going to a public high school then? Do you get a choice of which one? What is your favorite subject? I hope you do well & get to the school you want. How large are the high schools where you live? There are some pretty big public high schools here. I can't imagine what it would be like with so many other kids. I would feel lost I think.

Well I just realized that this post is getting really long. Sorry about that. I like chatting with you & Lucy. I haven't seen anything from her in a while. She's probably busy with school stuff too. Nice talking to you. I hope you have a good week!

Hi Taylor,

I've typed around three pages now, so I can procrastinate a little. I'm writing an argumentative essay on the two-party political system paradigm and why it should be replaced and how that will contribute to why November will essentially change nothing. I like arguing, so any essay where I can do that is good enough for me. Congrats on the good grades. Eighth grade seems harder than 7th grade, since they're trying to prepare us for high school and all. I didn't take the test yet. I'm supposed to read the book this weekend, but I have to finish my essay, so I'm trying to cram it in. It's a short book, though.

Thanks for clearing up the demerits thing. But, is there a certain number of demerits that get you a detention or vice versa? Or is a demerit harsher than a detention?

Congrats on the winning record. I heard from another thread you started that you hurt your ankle and might miss the rest of the season. I hope it's get better and that you heal fast. How much do you practice with your violin? Do you know how to play any kind of difficult songs yet?

I've heard about the Explore test, but I'm supposed to take it in 9th grade to help decide what careers I might be good at. I take something similar to the Terra Nova; it's called the ISAT that I take in March/April of last year, but it's supposed to end this year because my state is changing the curriculum. It's to decide what classes I can take (honors classes, regular classes, etc.) Usually they give the results by the end of September or October. I think I screwed up on the English test, though. They kept asking me for my opinion of multiple-choice questions and I'm like, "My opinion isn't a choice on this test!" I'm glad it's ending.

I'm going to a public high school. The Writing program is great and so is the math program. I only hate the fact that they don't give you enough history and humanities options. Those are the subjects I really like. I don't have a choice on what school I go to. Unless I go back to private school, but I only have about two choices then. Our quasi-city is pretty big and it's divided up into townships so you have to go the public school that is in your district (Northwest Ordinance of 1783 that Jefferson proposed. That's why I like history. It explains why things are like they are.) Are you going to a private high school? The high schools are pretty big. The one I'll be going to has over 2000 students with about 500 students per grade. It has an open campus, similar to college campuses, so everything is pretty spread out. I think I would feel lost, too.

Nice to hear from you. Hope your ankle gets better.

Hi Taylor,

I hope your ankle is getting better. I heard you tore a ligament?

Anyways, what's the Explore test like? They're thinking about bringing it back to my school, so I'm deciding on whether or not I should worry about it or brush it off. I got my standardized testing results this week to help decide for my high school classes. Did you get the Terra Nova results back? My friend took the Terra Nova and said the grading scale is completely different from the test I took, even though they use the grades in all of these tests for statistics.

Hi Ivy,

My ankle is getting better but it is still sore. The swelling is down mostly now. The doctor told me Tuesday that I have a small tear in one of the ligaments. It should heal on it's own so I shouldn't need surgery. That's a relief but it still sucks. I hate trying to get around on crutches. Taking a shower on one good leg is an adventure. I can't put any weight on it yet. I see the doctor again next week & he will probably put a special boot on it so I can walk around without crutches. I guess it all depends on how everything is healing though.

The Explore test is interesting. It's divided into English, Math, Science & Reading. They have what they call passages that you read & then answer a group of questions. They're multiple choice questions. I do pretty good at the English & Reading stuff but I struggle with Math & science. I get decent grades but I have to work a lot harder at those subjects. I thought the math & science parts of the test were really hard. I think we get the results back next month. I haven't got the Terra Nova results back yet. I don't remember when we are supposed to get them.

Congrats on your election as president of the Junior Honor Society. That's a great achievement. Your family must be really proud of you.

Hi Taylor,

Sorry I haven't replied in almost a month. I've been really busy with schoolwork, extracurriculars, and a bunch of other stuff. This is the first free weekend I had in a while.

So, how are you? Is your ankle better? I assume that it's either done healing or in the finishing process. When is volleyball tryouts? I hope your ankle healed before tryouts. I don't know if I'm doing the Explore test now. I got my test scores back. The scores were great and much better than I anticipated. But it's similar to the Explore test, except English and Reading is combined and the Science test is easier. It only reviewed what we learned in the past year.

Thanks. They're proud. My friends made a bet about it.

Hope to hear from you soon.
