Subject: I always thought it sounded very natural and off the cuff. It was very much like her real personality. Eldred pulled off a real upset that year. The two most dynamic contestants onstage were Anton and double preliminary winner Baumann. My theory is the judges were split on those two and that allowed Eldred to sneak in as winner. Although another theory is her answer in regard to her handicapped sister sealed the deal for her.

In reply to: 's message, "Susan Anton's answer was widely regarded as outstanding at the time. She appeared on TV shows and in magazines and newspapers after the pageant was over. It starts at 1:34:00 here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x99EvkbByUI" on 15:42:06 04/17/26 Fri

Imagine how much of a curmudgeon you'd have to be to not find Susan Anton's answer adorable lol. Absolutely no pretense; just a real, funny moment. Would easily get points from me! This is the problem with the final question... it is too subjective to make much of a difference. The Larissa Meek answer was a trainwreck from start to finish... she asked for the question repeated, clearly had no idea what she was being asked, looked noticeably frustrated... it was deeply uncomfortable. The average MAO girl has had more than enough interview training to finagle her way through a confusing question and out to one of her talking points. So in addition to MAO not stressing the Q&A as much as Miss USA does, the girls are also - on average - better prepared, and that combination means precious few complete flubs. As has been mentioned, ironically, one of the few examples of a clear flub was Betty Cantrell. Maybe it had effected her if there were a final ballot that year... (NT)...but there wasn't, and the question counted so little that it was no obstacle for her.
