For those not yet born or pageant fans who want to see the good ol' day of great Miss USA pageant telecasts, see the 1982 Miss USA show (video link below) that aired exactly 42 years ago on Thursday, May 17, 1984 on CBS from Lakeland, Florida (which hosted Miss USA in 1984 and 1985):

(Notice, for whatever stupid reason, someone removed all of the names of the 1984 contestants (including the two Miss Teen-USA titleholders) in this contest that was previously there. Even the winners of the state costume (Arizona), Miss Amity/Congeniality (New Hampshire), and Miss Photogenic (Texas) have all been removed. Now only those who were in the top are featured.)

It was during this pageant 42 years ago tonight that New Mexico got its first (and still only) Miss USA winner in Miss New Mexico-USA 1984, Mai Therese Shanley of Alamogordo, New Mexico (formerly Miss New Mexico MAO 1983) who would place as a semi-finalist in the Miss Universe pageant in Miami, Florida in July 1984.

The 1984 Miss USA pageant saw three former Miss America contestants place among the top three--winner (New Mexico), first runner-up (West Virginia), and second runner-up (Tennessee).

Sadly, two months after the Miss USA pageant, Miss Montana-USA 1984, Kristi Lynn Boyce Ogren and her step-father Erik were killed in a July 1984 vehicle accident in the mountains of western Montana.

Wonder if Mai will return to Miami in late August to attend this year's Miss USA pageant in honor of the 75th year anniversary of the Miss USA pageant. It would be wonderful to see Mai again. Happy 42nd Miss USA anniversary today to Mai (later top five at Dream Girl U.S.A.) and all of the contestants from that year's 1984 Miss USA show in Lakeland. Where are they now, we wonder?
