For Virginia, that would have to be Julianne Smith. When she won state, she was the cute girl-next-door type. By Miss America, she was more glamorous. She could also from what I recall fit into this discussion of first runners-up who were quite happy with that placement. (NT)No name

LOVE Julianne Smith, wanted her to win the whole thing. She was fantastic in every onstage portion of the pageant, better than Cash in my opinion. I imagine interview pushed Cash into the winners circle, but I would much rather have had Smith as the winner that night. (NT)No name

Kelly Johnson, CO -Nurse Kelly. When she won in CO she was a total mess and she looked spectacular at Miss America. Too bad they didn't have a top 5 ballot that year becuase she would have easily won Miss America. Her on stage question, and everything but talent, were amazing. And, her talent got her so much national recognition that it would have been so great for the program had she won Miss America. She definitely was a more well known celebrity than Betty. (NT)No name

As a Wisconsinite, I was thrilled when Laura Kaeppeler won Miss America. She was gorgeous and had a decent enough talent, but shortly after she was crowned Miss Wisconsin she was on a morning show and I was not impressed at all in how she presented herself in interview. I honestly didn't think she had a chance at winning Miss America. However, she worked with a team of people that not only got her interview up to speed, but also somewhat changed her appearance -- thus the darker hair and dark make-up. I think she was very glad when her year was up, and since then has never returned or supported the state program. (NT)No name

Hannah Smith, Miss Illinois. Looked legit homely win she won the state title, but was a knockout at Miss America and made Top 10. (NT)No name

Shilah Phillips, Miss Texas 2006 came to Miss Texas as a first-year contestant with a wardrobe that was "good enough". When she got to Miss America, she was the epitome of glamor!Glynda
