Kazan- Don't worry, Cye. He has every reason to be pissed at me.... If I were him, I'd be angry too.
~+~*Jaysen and the feline both glanced back at you.*~+~
Jaysen- I apologize, but this is something that I must do. You have helped us in th past, so I do believe that you deserve an explanation. You are familiar with the Ahr'Teyan Card System, correct? Three decks of ninety, fifty, and three? The smallest deck is put into play with every action- one card for a Physical Attack, one for Defense, and one for Magic.
The second deck contains effects, elements, and spells, and a few pieces of equipment that can be attached to beasts and spirits while they fight. The largest deck, the deck of ninety, contains creatures, beasts, beings, and other various entities that can be called into battle. It is a very delicate system that even few among the Ahr'Teyan have mastered.
~+~*He glanced back to the rest of the group of Eyerlings, and then waved Faelin over. She took a seat beside him, more or less to lessen the distance between your eyes so that you wouldn't have to crane your head back to listen to her.*~+~
Jaysen- I'll let her explain, because she is one of those who has truly mastered the system.
Faelin- Right.... The cards all respond to three external sources, and one internal source. The external sources are its alliance in the cosmos, its physical surroundings, and the mentality and physical ability of the person using the card.
It's alliance to the cosmos is always balanced, but many lean towards one side or the other. There are very few cards that obtain true balance.
Its physical surroundings deturmine how the entity of the card will react when summoned. The best example I can think of on short notice would be calling a horse to fight three miles above the surface against a flying enemy. The horse would be unable to fight, and would fall because it can not fight off the effects of gravity. The same is true with the cards. Beasts are held more to those rules than spiritual creatures, but the idea still stands.
They also depend heavily on the user. If someone stupid gets ahold of the cards and tries to use them, they won't respond for fear of getting hurt fighting in a pointless battle. In order to use the card, you must know the entity within it, as well as how far it is willing to go for you. It also depends on your physical state, because they won't protect someone who can't protect themselves.
The internal source that they obey if the driving source of the card, its spirit or soul. There are very few complete decks of cards out there because this force is very difficult to obtain. You either have to defeat the card in a battle and get it to make the card for you, win the card from someone else, or seek out the cards self existing in this existance and get the card from it that way. The latter is nigh impossible, because all of those creatures and beings are sealed away under VERY strong protections- most under their own free will. Those who aren't are guarded by families for generations.
Jaysen- I belonged to such a family. We were localized in one of the highest levels of Luce's castle. There, we watched over one of the Spirits that powered the Ahr'Teyan cards.
~+~*Faelin dug into the pouch at her side, and withdrew one of the creature cards. She handed it to you, and you examined it. The image on the front struk you right away as looking like a White Spirit. A pure white human-like female, with very long white hair, and a massive set of blue eyes. You couldn't see her mouth, or any details on her body. She differed from White Spirits in that she had legs, and wasn't akin to a ghost in appearance. A set of golden wings was on her back, stretched up towards the top corners of the card, mirroring her arms which were pointed towards the lower corners. She appeared to be standing on a small silver sphere, that both feet barely fit onto. Behind her, a weave of very intricate blue and red ribbon around a field of stars. The borders of the card were covered in small glyphs, celtic-like knots, with symbols for the sun, moon, and earth at the top. At the bottom, in brilliant golden lettering, it read 'Orelia.'*~+~
Faelin- Orelia is a very old word from Ahr'Teyan culture. In your language, it would best be translated as 'Keeper Guardian' as nothing else quite fits. She is one of three guardian-type cards. The others would best be translated as 'Dharma Guardian' and 'Chaos Guardian.' No, they aren't strictly one way or another- these three cards are actually the only ones that balance exactly. They are among the most powerful to have ever existed, and amongst the rarest to find in any collection. Most decks are incomplete, and thus less powerful, because these three cards are nearly impossible to gain.
Anyway, the Keeper Guardian is the mistress of the universe. Before she was a card, it was her job to gather worlds, moons, and stars that were too powerful, too weak, corrupt, or leaning too far to one side of the universal spectrum. She passed judgement on them, and either allowed them to be reborn or destroyed them entirely. If she wanted them reborn, she would leave a Guardian behind that would wake under given conditions. Sandar was one of her legacies.
~+~*She paused to think of the proper words to use.*~+~
Ahr'Teyans were once a favored race by the universal deities, hence why we had such a powerful bond to the Faeries once upon a time. When we were a young race, my ancestors broke off and formed the clans. Shortly after, there was a minor crisis in the universe. Physical manifestations of both Chaos and Dharma appeared at the same time. While this in its self is not cause for alarm, they appeared rather close to each other- which caused the problem of the masses meeting and balancing each other- which would have resulted in a good many worlds that followed them being snapped back to a state of balance, which would have spawned another Ephsidel.
In order to prevent this, many creatures came to us. Guardians, Deities, and Guardians- amongst which was the Keeper Guardian. They picked us as their captors because we possessed the magic and ability to use them properly, so they sealed themselves away at various locations and created the first cards. Using them, as well as the other two decks that were created from Ahr'Teyan blood, my ancestors were able to manipulate the energies of all ninety creatures that came to them to slowly drive Dharma and Chaos away from each other. It took several generations, but it worked.
~+~*Several Generations for an Ahr'Teyan would likely be the equivalent of a few millenia to any other race.*~+~
Afterwards, it was quite impossible for any of those who had sealed themselves to be free again, simply because they had created the chains themselves with that intention. However, it was possible to move them from object to object and person to person. Apparently, they all had this ability to transfer into the minds of people of the Ahr'Teyan blood line, and embed themselves into their thoughts, memories, or whatever was convenient at the time. This allowed them to be physically with someone at any given time, as well as to relocate their seals when they felt threatened. In this way, they also gained the ability to physically manifest through whomever they happened to be attached to at the time.
So, this is where Jaysen's problem lies.
Jaysen- Indeed. Some of them, such as Orelia there, are still VERY tempted to follow through with the missions of their past lives. In her case, it means destroying and judging worlds by the masses and killing everybody on those worlds. Others that were a universal threat, like she is, were placed under other seals to keep them from moving about. Families guard them, and all was well.
Faelin- There was added protection on top of that. Normally, it is possible to call the creature to you and put it in your own head by simply calling on it. They will answer anyone that they think worthy, and stay with them until dismissed or until they choose to abandon their host. In this manor, it was possible for people to keep these creatures with them at all times, to pass them off to friends, and to summon them in their pure form to battle. That was not possible for those under other seals. Understandably so, as it is possible to manipulate them if they are in your head.
~+~*She smiled.*~+~
You should try it sometime. Many Ahr'Teyan's have lost the ability to use the cards, or to call on the creatures sealed into them. A good many mortals can do it, but they don't know how or they lack the general knowledge to try and call them. If you ever want to take a whack at it, I can lend you a card and explain it to you. The first one you carry with you will give you a nickname by which all of the others will call you until the end of time. Mine is roughly translated to 'Follower' because of how I was raised as a Clan Daughter. All of the names are unique, and say something about you. They never call you by your real name when they talk to you. Anyway....
Jaysen- Kazan heard Orelia calling out for freedom, apparently, and came to see what all the fuss was about. In the process, he broke all of those barriers that my forefathers built, and she took the chance to jump into his head. She hasn't budged since.
Kazan- What can I say, she likes me.
Jaysen- That's not the point! If you keep her with you, she's going to start destroying worlds again!
Kazan- Oh ye of little faith.
Faelin- I, and many of the other Eyerlings, agree with Jaysen. His anger and fears are justified, because Orelia IS a doomsday creature. She WILL give in to her callings of destroying worlds sooner or later.
~+~*You handed the card back to her.*~+~
Faelin- Even I have tried calling her, but she won't come out of his head. She knows that we would seal her away again, and she's avoiding that like the plague. She's been with Kazan for so long, I believe, that it would be rather difficult to remove her short of a few drastic steps that have worked in the past for others. Such steps include killing him, searching his mind manually -which would likely be worse than killing him- or convincing him to eject her from his consciousness. We're really trying to avoid the first two.... Or, at least I'M trying to avoid the first two. Can't say the same for Jaysen.
Jaysen- It's not like I'm attacking him for the sake of attacking him. Orelia MUST be sealed away. Most of the things that currently exist in the universe would fall into her bad list. She can, and will, go after them all eventually. This world is among those that she would destroy, simply because of where it is located. If I kill Kazan and take her back, I can hold her in my mind until I get her somewhere safe- and then I can use Kazan's blood to re-seal her. I'd avoid it if I could, but unless she willingly leaves or unless he ejects her, that danger remains.
Kazan- It isn't my fault that she hates you, Jaysen.
[OOC- Yeah, long explanation- I'm sorry. It WILL be important on the next quest, though- so if you skipped half of it, I advise you to reconsider =D Also, I advise you to take Faelin up on that offer later.]
