Subject: Places to see in Vegas

If you are going to Vegas for TIGRE II this long Fourth of July weekend of 2013, here are some of the places that you can go and check out aside from the usual casinos and the shows of course. Some of you probably already have seen these places but for some like myself, these places could be good places to see for the three day weekend in addition to attending the reunion. I have been to Las Vegas before but that was when a lot of those places weren't there yet. Have fun everyone! Have a great reunion!

3 days in Las Vegas
Created by Chelsea Tystad

A tour of the best things to do in Las Vegas. Put on your walking shoes and be ready for the sights.

Good for: Families, Groups, Seniors, Individuals
Seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter
DAY 1
Forum Shops at Caesars Palace

This busy shopping mall was built to resemble a street from Ancient Rome.

Fee: No
Duration of visit: 1-2 hours
Bellagio Fountains

The fountains put on their show -- wonderfully timed to music choreography -- every 15 minutes or so after dark and last for a few minutes. It's very pretty and lasts for the duration of the song. Stay for many other songs, especially the Michael Jackson one. The water streams move in the Jackson way. Don't go on high wind day, not only you get wet, the show may be stopped for that reason. There is plenty to see at the Bellagio, so time your visit so that you can pick up at least two fountain displays. Also: be sure to visit the "conservatory" inside the hotel for beautiful floral displays, seasonally changed.

Fee: No
Duration of visit: <1 hour
Blue Man Group

An imaginative stage show that combines percussion-driven music, flashy special effects and instruments made from plastic piping into a visual extravaganza.

Fee: Yes
Duration of visit: 1-2 hours
DAY 2
Valley of Fire State Park

While in Las Vegas, just a mere 1 hour drive up I-15, is a beautiful place called Valley of Fire State Park. Look for sign on I-15. Turn right. The park rangers have a ticket office and it is $10 for the car load. Very scenic drive and hiking is available. Get a park map at the ranger station and make sure you see it all. There are lots of rocks that are fun for kids and the young-at-heart to scramble around. If you continue on the main road and exit to the east, this road will get you to the north end of Lake Mead. Look for big horned sheep on the hillsides. Enjoy.

Fee: Yes
Duration of visit: More than 3 hours
Lake Mead National Recreation Area

A year-round recreational area for boaters, swimmers, fishermen, hikers, photographers, campers, and sightseers. Lake Mead is a huge reservoir impounded by the Hoover Dam. Approximately 30 miles from Las Vegas. Entrance fees charged.

Fee: Yes
Duration of visit: 1-2 hours
Hoover Dam

Hoover Dam, once known as Boulder Dam, is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between Arizona and Nevada. Hoover Dam impounds Lake Mead, and is located near Boulder City, Nevada. Paid parking, visitor center and guided tours.

Fee: No
Duration of visit: 1-2 hours
DAY 3
Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign

The 25-foot-tall sign is located in the median at 5100 Las Vegas Boulevard South. The sign marks the classic start to the famous Las Vegas Strip. A small parking area is provided.

Fee: No
Duration of visit: <1 hour
The Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian

The Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian is a luxurious indoor shopping center located within The Venetian. The center’s 80 upscale boutiques and world-class restaurants are nestled around a charming and faithful reproduction of Venice’s Grand Canal, winding through cobbled walkways and streetside cafes with the sounds of serenading gondoliers and Streetmosphere performances. The center features an exclusive mix of retail including: Movado, Dooney & Bourke, Bernard Passman and award winning restaurants, such as TAO Asian Bistro, Wolfgang Puck’s Postrio, and Emeril Lagasse’s Delmonico Steakhouse.

Fee: No
Duration of visit: 1-2 hours
Gondola Rides at the Venetian

The Gondola rides at the Venetian are a great change of pace from all of the walking, gambling and eating you'll probably do and probably one of the most affordable activities in Vegas. Guests have a choice of scheduling an indoor or outdoor ride (lasting about 15-20 minutes). The 'box office' is outside at the canal and reservations can only be made same day. You will also see the photo gallery nearby (yes, there are photographers who will snap a pic when you get on the gondola).

With the Indoor option, you glide through St Marks square, under walking bridges and past the lovely shops. Onlookers smile and wave as you ride through the canal. Although it's indoor, you can schedule a specific time, regardless of weather.

The Outdoor option is most like the 'real thing' as the sun shines or wind blows, however if there are gusty winds or rain in the forecast, you cannot schedule the ride much more than an hour or so in advance. If you have a good weather day though, the Outside option is ideal.

The gondolas hold 4 adults, so if you don't specify that you want a private gondola ride (as in you're willing to ride with another couple or group), the cost is $16 per person/$32 per couple. If you request a private ride for two, it's $32 per person/$64 per couple (basically the cost of 4 passengers). Don't forget to save some dough to tip the singing gondoliers. If you want, you can actually get married on a gondola as you sail the canal. Here's a tip--schedule around dinner time or a non-peak time and you may get a private ride for two even if you didn't request it.

The gondoliers are trained and most have a fantastic signing voice. The gondoliers are friendly and enjoyable to talk to.

Fee: Yes
Duration of visit: 1 hour
Fremont Street Experience
A five-block pedestrian covered mall with kiosks, carts and a nightly light-and-sound show.

Fee: No
Duration of visit: 1-2 hours
