Subject: Ukay-ukay or Wagwagan Flea Market at Night in Baguio City

One of the most fun things to do at night while in Baguio is to go the flea market on Harrison Road in front of Burnham Park. The market is quite big. It is about three city blocks long. They sell all kinds of used items such as clothes, shoes, and other items imported from the neighboring countries such as Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong and some from the United States. Even if you don’t buy anything , walking around there is fun. It reminds me of the street fairs that they have in the states. It also has food stalls complete with music which is usually played by the blind people of Baguio. Another attraction which drives people especially tourists from the provinces where the weather is always warm is the cool weather so make sure to bring a sweater or a jacket if you plan on going there sometime in the future. I think the flea market is open every day except when it is raining and during holidays. It operates starting at around 8 PM and closes around 1 or 2 AM. The Ukay-ukay business is actually flourishing all over the Philippines but it is more noticeable in the cities such as Baguio. I am not sure if ukay-ukay is good for the country since it could kill the local garment industry. However, it is a good thing for a lot of people who cannot afford to buy brand new shoes, clothes and other items, and besides though used, a lot of these items are better quality than some of their brand new counterparts and you can find rare items that you don’t find anywhere at the ukay-ukays.
