Subject: ? ... Strut brace fitting dilemma

ok, so i bought a 2nd hand strut brace from a 6cylinder late model e30. It seems to be 1.5-2cm too SHORT to fit across my struts!
now if my strut had worn and sagged, wouldnt the bar be too LONG??? ARGH!
what is the OEM distances between the strut towers on an 87 325e? did this distance change in the later models???
