I have just come back from Greece where I was driven around in an E46 318i. Guess what? The cooling system let go! The driver noticed the coolant level light on and brought it to the dealer. They checked the car and let it out again - saying it would be investigated further at the next service as it seemed to be just a sensor problem.

Anyway, last week the temp guage went skywards and the engine started pinking. I discovered the (electric) fan wasn't running (but fuses OK). When we added fluid and bled the system in a garage, the rad did not heat up - so we left it there to be towed.

Strange huh?
