Stating that detonation occurs after x:1 ratio occurs is misleading. It really depends on the combustion chamber design, the surfaces involved, the fuel (of course), the extent of swirl or tumble, the operational rpm, and other factors. On our old-school bathtub heads, the compression limit is probably about what you stated, but you would have to use fuel with a higher octane rating than can be found at the local gas station.
