Subject: timing...

Hey
Just wondering if people do there own timing checks here or take it to the garage(any garage or bmw specialist?) I have a 318i m10 and was just wondering how easy it was. what are the common faults which out of sink timing might cause? My car is slightly over heating especailly when pushing the car hard, and it occasional back fires (i think-cuts out and make a pop sound when i'm starting up) these are pointers i think?
