Hi Joe,

I see this question quite a bit and the answers vary from owner to owner. I have an 89 325iX and the distributor cap (which should be the same as yours) does come off without pulling the fan or wires. It is a little fiddly but it does come off. The fan blades are somewhat flexible and you can spring the offending blade far enough to slide the cap off.

That's my experience so take it for what it's worth...
