This is sounding good. Toby, sounds like you have the tech articles; that is really great. I think you and Tnucu should both put up some demo forums and let us give them a test drive.
Let me suggest mod_gzip for apache -- I've seen it reduce page load times on other servers in the past. (HardOCP)
